About This Fierce Little Dragon Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a small but detailed dragon amigurumi with ridged wings and a line of spikes down the back. The design uses DK weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook to produce a sturdy, poseable little dragon. Clear, round-by-round instructions and assembly notes are included to help you finish with neat results.

You will make the nose, body, legs, wings, ears and spikes separately and sew them together for the final build. The wings are worked in rows to create a ridged underside and a smooth top.

Why You'll Love This Fierce Little Dragon Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it balances character and simplicity β€” the dragon has so much personality from just a few shaping techniques. I enjoy the structured wings and the little spikes down the back that give a bold silhouette. I also love that the pattern is modular: you crochet separate parts and sew them together, so you can customise placement easily. Making several of these in different colours is one of my favourite weekend projects.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customise this dragon β€” change the main colour for a whole new personality, like pastel pink for a sweet companion or deep green for a forest guardian.

To make a larger dragon, choose a bulkier yarn and a larger hook; conversely use a finer yarn for a tiny keychain version.

I often swap the yarn for a fluffy or textured DK to give the wings and body a cozy, plush effect.

Try different eye treatments: safety eyes for a glossy look, beads for sparkle, or embroidered pupils for a softer, child-safe finish.

Add wire into the legs or tail if you want a posable dragon that can hold poses, but be sure to use craft wire and wrap it so there are no sharp edges.

Mix yarn colours along the spikes for a striped or ombre spine β€” sew each spike in a contrasting colour for extra detail.

Experiment with embroidered facial markings to change expression; a small eyebrow stitch can make your dragon look cheeky or wise.

Make outfits or accessories like a tiny saddle, scarf or crown to personalise your dragon for gifting or themed displays.

I frequently attach little props such as a crocheted gem or tiny book to make storytelling sets with a family of dragons.

Don’t be afraid to alter stitch counts subtly to lengthen the neck or tail; just maintain symmetry and count carefully when shaping.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during continuous rounds causes you to lose the start of round; place a marker at the start of every round to stay on track. βœ— Overstuffing the head or tail makes shaping and attaching pieces difficult; stuff gradually and stop stuffing before finishing rounds so joints bend naturally. βœ— Forgetting to set safety eyes at the right round results in misplaced eyes; insert safety eyes between rounds 8 and 9 as directed before stuffing the head. βœ— Working inconsistent tension makes wings and body uneven; keep a relaxed, consistent tension and check stitch counts frequently to maintain shape.

Make claw - ch 3, turn, miss 1st ch, ss in next ch, sc in next ch. FO leaving a good length of yarn. Use this to secure the last claw to the rest of the wing, then take yarn through wing to its base, ready to sew onto body. Weave in ends.

β€” Ears :

Item Name (P1) :

Ears (make 2): Ch 6, turn. Skip 1st st, sc, dc, sc, ss. Leave the last ch and ss into the back of the previous 4 st. FO, leaving a length of yarn.

β€” Completing your dragon :

Info :

Sew the spikes along the back from just behind the ears to the tip of the tail. Take your time to make sure they are straight and in the exact middle of the back. This will be helpful when you try to position the wings and the legs.

Info :

If you haven't used safety eyes, embroider eyes or sew on beads for eyes. Embroider a roughly diamond shape in a contrasting colour, then use black for the pupils so they look a bit like cat's eyes.

Info :

Sew the ears onto head above eyes, going over the last chain several times to create the brow bone shape. Weave in any ends.

Info :

Sew the legs on in the positions shown in the photos. Sew on the wings a little distance from either side of the spikes with the front edge about level with the front legs. The ridged side should be the underside of the wings.

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the spikes along the centre of the back from just behind the ears to the tip of the tail; pin them first to ensure they are exactly centred before sewing.
  • Position and sew the ears onto the head above the eyes, taking the last chain several times to create a subtle brow bone shape.
  • Attach the legs in the positions shown in the reference photos, spacing the front legs so they sit just under the front edge of the wings.
  • Sew the wings on either side of the spikes, a little distance from the midline, with the ridged (striped) side facing down as the underside of the wing.
  • If using safety eyes attach them between rounds 8 and 9 on each side before stuffing and finishing the head; otherwise embroider or sew on beads and then finish stuffing and close.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘This dragon is made mostly in continuous rounds; do not join rounds unless the pattern explicitly tells you to.
  • πŸ’‘Use a stitch marker to mark the start of each round β€” a small piece of contrasting yarn placed under the start stitch works well.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff the body as you go so the dragon can bend its neck and tail; avoid overstuffing which can distort shaping.
  • πŸ’‘You can start rounds with a magic ring or follow the preferred method: ch2, work 6 sc into 1st ch, using the tail to pull the hole closed.

This Fierce Little Dragon pattern brings a playful guardian to life with textured wings and a spiky back. Make one to guard your desk or gift to a friend β€” each one has its own personality! 🧢🧡
