About This Guell Ladies' sweater Pattern

This pattern creates a ladies' seamless top-down sweater with a circular yoke colorwork motif and ribbed hem and cuffs. It includes full instructions for many sizes and uses small needles to achieve a dense, warm fabric. Charts are provided for the yoke in multiple panels to follow around the circumference.

You will work short rows in the yoke, divide for sleeves, and knit sleeves in the round with matching colorwork charts. The pattern includes needle and yarn recommendations and clear sizing tables.

Why You'll Love This Guell Ladies' sweater Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because the circular yoke motif is elegant and striking while remaining wearable for everyday life. I enjoy the top-down construction because it lets you try the piece on as you go and make adjustments for a perfect fit. The colorwork charts give you design flexibility and a beautiful finished effect that looks much more complex than it is. Working small needles and fine yarn results in a cozy, luxurious fabric that I find so satisfying to knit and wear.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize this yoke β€” try swapping the color palette for high contrast brights for a modern look or soft pastels for a subtler effect.

If you want a chunkier, cozier version, use a heavier yarn and larger needles; this will create a warm, bulky sweater ideal for winter.

For a finer, lighter pullover, choose a thinner yarn and smaller needles, and follow the same charts β€” you'll end up with a more delicate, elegant drape.

I sometimes add a small embroidered detail to the front or a coordinating crocheted flower for a personal touch; these little extras make each piece unique.

Consider length adjustments: lengthen the body by knitting extra rounds before ribbing for a tunic, or shorten for a classic sweater length β€” I try it on as I go to get the fit I like.

Want a sleeker sleeve? Reduce the sleeve increases slightly or work fewer repeat rounds in the sleeve body for a slimmer arm.

To make the sweater more wearable across seasons, use a wool-silk blend for a lighter, softer fabric that still has structure and warmth.

I often change underarm cast-on counts slightly to fine-tune armhole size for comfort β€” small adjustments there make a big difference in fit.

For a vintage feel, pick muted, tonal shades and block gently to relax the fabric and enhance drape; for a modern look, use crisp color contrasts in the charts.

If you're adventurous, swap the circular yoke for your own chart motif, keeping the stitch counts aligned; designing your own chart is a fun way to personalize the sweater further.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping the BoR marker placement can shift the colorwork center; always place and move the BoR marker exactly as instructed for your size. βœ— Changing needle sizes without checking gauge leads to incorrect fit; swatch in stockinette with recommended needles and block it before proceeding. βœ— Not spreading the stitches for sleeves evenly creates uneven armholes; follow the stitch distribution and place markers M1, M2, M3 precisely to maintain shape. βœ— Ignoring short-row instructions will distort the yoke shaping; follow the RS/WS short-row steps and repeats exactly and test on scrap if unsure.

Info :

Circular Yoke Chart #1 through Chart #10 are provided as full-color charts across pages 11–20. Read charts from bottom to top and from right to left; charts indicate the order of work for the colorwork pattern of the circular yoke and show all rows. Follow LLI and RLI markers where indicated on the charts.

Assembly Instructions

  • Divide and hold sleeve stitches: transfer the sleeve stitches to spare needles or stitch holders and cast on the specified underarm stitches; place markers M1, M2, M3 and BoR marker to mark sections.
  • When ready, rejoin sleeve stitches: place held sleeve stitches on 2.75 mm [US2] needles, join new working yarn at RS, work round to end, place M1 at start of sleeve and BoR marker, then continue in the established pattern.
  • After completing yoke and body, pick up both sleeves and work ribbing: work sleeves in the established pattern for the indicated rounds, then change to smaller needles and work ribbing before binding off all stitches.
  • Block the finished sweater: moisten and block the garment flat until completely dry, making sure to center the colorwork motifs and even out the hem and cuffs.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Place and move the Beginning of Round (BoR) marker exactly as instructed to center the colorwork motif correctly.
  • πŸ’‘Work short-row shaping carefully, keeping the working yarn taut over the double stitch so the short-row stitches sit correctly on the needle.
  • πŸ’‘Check stitch counts after key sections (after yoke charts, after sleeve division, after shaping) to ensure you match the totals listed for your size.

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

Refer to the measurements table in the pattern; the sweater is provided in sizes 32 to 62 (UK/European chest sizes) with detailed finished measurements for each size.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

You can substitute yarns, but this will change the gauge and finished size; swatch with your chosen yarn and adjust needle sizes to match the pattern gauge of 30 sts and 36 rows = 10x10 cm in stockinette on 2.75 mm needles after blocking and stretching.

Do I need experience with colorwork and short rows?

This pattern is rated intermediate; basic experience with stranded colorwork and short-row shaping is recommended for best results.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most knitters will spend 12-15 hours or more across several days, depending on size, yarn, and colorwork speed.
