The Hook: A Comeback Story (Or Something Like It)

Photographer: Richard Sanders

Photographer: Richard Sanders

This is the beginning.

In 2016, we started our site in a dimly lit bedroom on the corner of Locust & 15th in a basement apartment. Since then, we have grown exponentially and without limit. We could not be more appreciative of the music scene, not only here in Philadelphia, but the entire East Coast. We would not be who we are without the bands & artists that fuel us further, push us harder than what we believed.

In the two years since our beginning, we have hosted dozens of showcases, reviewed hundreds of albums, and put our stickers on lots of stop signs in different places around the country. We have been supported by volunteer writers, photographers and artists. We have paid every artist who has worked with us, and donated more than three-hundred dollars to different Philadelphia non-profit organizations. Without our scenes, near and far, we would not be where we are.

So, here we are. Two and a half years later, and we’re ready to get started. We will continue to host shows, to create charity EP’s to donate to important non-profit organizations, we will continue to review and talk about local music. We hope to begin to give voices to those who don’t always have them in our scene, we want to create critical op-ed pieces to, not only fuel and better our scene, but to also better ourselves as people in a world. It’s time to talk about it, so we will. We welcome guest writers, bloggers, and artists to host their work on our site. We welcome those who are in need of a safe space, of suggestions for shows, albums, groups that will allow every body in our scene the place it deserves.

If you're interested in learning more about us, we've got a handy video now, so check it out below!

To begin, we have our first returning showcase on July 13th at our place, so if you’ve never been to a Hook Show, this would be the one to get to. We will be hosting a show on July 17th at Century Bar, and future shows will soon be announced. We are in the works for a 5th Charity EP, featuring all unheard, local music for a good cause.

As always, you can check out our social media down below to keep up while you're on the move. More announcements to follow, so stay tuned!

Bravestation Releases New Summer Single

Toronto’s new wave pop trio Bravestation is back with a summer single!

Premiered at CLASH, “Up For You” is a soulful, retro inspired track that’s equal parts soothing and upbeat. Working towards their highly anticipated full-length debut, the band wanted to put out a seasonal offering for fans “to turn up while day drinking on the lake in a boat or lounging/partying by the pool with friends”.

Check it out below!

“We were excited to finally work with pros and compiled like 30+ electronic-based demos on our laptops in anticipation of recording with these guys, but in the last week of the writing process we started jamming as a band for the first time when the idea for Up For You came to life. From all the songs they had to pick from, Michael and Jason chose the two that we wrote in the final couple of days as their favs after months of demoing…” says the band on the release!

Rock inspired quartet and Phoenix, AZ based group Lane Change have released the official music video for "Floodwater." Directed by RedBlackFilms, "Floodwater" is off of their recent four track EP, RISE.

Check out the video below!

Lizzie Shafer (Bass and Vocals) had this to say, "Even to the four of us in Lane Change, "Floodwater" means something different each time we play it. We really wanted to write a song that reflected everything we saw going on in the world, but didn't want tell the listener how to feel. In the concept for the video, we set out to capture the energy and message of the song visually to compliment the sonic element. We really wanted the ending to leave the viewer feeling a positive emotion no matter what the song and video meant to them.. We tried to focus on the live performance aspect while adding in a minimal, but yet emotional story line. We couldn't be more excited with the way it all came together!"

Decades In Release Video

Decades In have released a video for their new track “Buried Under.”

This song is off their first full self-titled record, and the album was produced by Ryan Furlott (It Prevails, American Me) of Rain City Audio in Portland, Or. According to Vocalist, Daniel Song, the song is about the struggle to keep going even in a situation of certain death. He was inspired by the Ghost Inside’s tragic bus accident and how they were able to get back on their feet.

While supporting bands like The Acadia Strain, Arsonists Get All The Girls, and I The Breather the band was able to release their own EP Closer to Home. Through weekend tours and music videos the band was able to gain a strong local following. They have toured a wider audience since. They have been working on this record since January 2016 and it is killer! This album captured every emotion and moment they have had in the past few years.

It was released on June 24th and is available on ITunes. They just finished a tour to support the record. For more check out their social media links below!

The Centuries Share Music Video Ft. Brandon Sidney

Straight out of Ukraine, The Centuries shared a music video back in May that featured Brandon Sidney (Palisades)!

The music video was released for their track, "Inside Of Me," and vocalist Eugene Lesnevsky had this to say, "The music video, directed by Alex Pimenov of Move Film, perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the song, along with elaborating the story with new details. The song is based on the story of the inner struggle of a person, who got lost doubting himself and searching for the way out. Whom is he engaged with in his dialogue? Maybe it's himself responding? Or a close friend? Or maybe another unwitting witness? Everyone will hear their own story,"

Check out the music video below!

Brandon Sidney had this to say on working with The Centuries, "It was great working with these guys! Definitely have the potential to take over the US market. Keep your eye out for them!"

Pyro, Ohio Release Music Video

Pyro, Ohio hails from Virginia (despite their name) and the band released a kick-ass music video back in April for their track, "The Truest Reflection."

After a successful trek through the midwest on tour with The Apprehended, the guys in Pyro, Ohio were stoked on their new music video off the Andreas Magnusson (Haste The Day, Oh Sleeper, The Black Dahlia Murder) produced Keepsakes that was released back in November.

“The Truest Reflection” is the band’s third single off the critically acclaimed album and the music video is in dedication to the members' parents.

You can check it out below!

Guitarist Stephen Noel had this to say, "To go along with the theme of our latest release, we really wanted this music video to feature a lot of nostalgic imagery – and for us, that came in the form of old toys and VHS tapes, band posters, and fake wood paneling. The storyline of the video echoes Peter’s lyrics for the song; in which he contemplates how important his parents have been in shaping his life, and thanking them for loving him unconditionally."

Suit Of Lights Share New Single

Suit of Lights recently shared “Break Open the Head,” their first track off of upcoming album Break Open the Head - expected out June 6, 2016.

Suit of Lights is a genre-defying four piece band created in 2003 by Joe Darone, a former member of The Fiendz and The Rosenbergs. Unsatisfied with creative standstill, SOL tastefully blends bits of 60's pop, punk, progressive rock, metal, jazz, and baroque pop into their music, ensuring each new Suit of Lights album will be a unique, unexplored aural journey.

Darone says, “Some bands go for 30 years with one sound, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But that’s boring to me.”

Darone accessed a love for art and music at an early age. Since then, his drumming has taken him places like CBGB to The Fillmore, from opening for The Ramones with The Fiendz, to touring with Echo & The Bunnymen with The Rosenbergs. Darone is also a visual artist, and has produced artwork for Madonna, Agnostic Front, and Van Halen under the pseudonym Zeckle. Currently, he’s creating the album art for all Suit of Lights releases.

Break Open the Head follows Shine On Forever, which reached critical acclaim and was included in "Top Albums of the Year" lists by Brooklyn's The Big Takeover and the UK's Instrumental.

Produced by Tim 'Rumblefish' Gilles, Break Open the Head is an energetic leap forward, seeming dense and challenging, yet very accessible and catchy. The music is an expression of psychic upheaval through art, embodying music’s exceptional ability of transporting listeners to a higher consciousness.

"Break Open The Head," is streaming off of Bandcamp, so check it out!

The lyrics say it all: “honor your higher self.”
