Album Announcement Comes From Roam Along With New Single

image2.png

ROAM has officially announced they are releasing their second album titled Great Heights & Nosedives on October 13th, 2017 via Hopeless Records. The first single from the album, "Playing Fiction", premiered in the UK on BBC's Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter and can now be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.

Check out the music video for it below!

Alex Adam (Guitar / Vocals) explains the thinking behind the track, "Playing Fiction is really a song about pretending, and the realization that things aren't always how they seem. Maybe you're pretending you're ok, saying nothing's wrong when it actually is, or, as is the case in Playing Fiction, you're pretending a relationship hasn't run its course when it has.

The video for the song centers around myself and Costello walking through a town with strange scenes appearing as the day progresses. It all builds towards our realization that we're stuck in a fairytale daydream, and we end up being a part of the fantastical world. It was a lot of fun to shoot with all our friends and some cheeky special extras in various costumes. We'll let you guess as to their identities..."

The album is now available for pre-order through the band's site, or on iTunes with an instant grat download of "Playing Fiction" here.

Sun Kin Share 'Under Standing Waves' With Listener

After a premiere on Impose Magazine, Oakland's Sun Kin is sharing "Under Standing Waves" with listeners everywhere. The project consists of Kabir Kumar (lead vox, guitar) along with Kevin Lehner (guitar), Phil Di Leo (keys and guitar), Nick Blossom (drums), and Bryan Lovett (bass), and eccentuates an electrifying post-pop sound that fits right in with this new music renaissance we're experiencing.

While the song was being written, Kabir’s Nani (maternal grandmother) passed away suddenly from a stroke, and the song feels lit with her vivid passion and pride for making her loved ones feel loved, even thousands of miles away. "Under Standing Waves" follows and is paired with Sun Ray's recently released single, "Bijak."

New Single from The Porchistas, EP to Be Released Soon

Following the release of their daring political single, “Mr. Chump,” The Porchistas have released a new track called “Mischief Night” off their upcoming EP, Axis and Allies. Described as “space-rockers,” The Porchistas, based out of New Jersey, believe in inspiring a sense of community with their music.

Check out the single below!

Founder Alan “Sucia” Smith says, “We see music and art as community building endeavors. When we throw events and shows at the house we try to make them trash free or trash minimal at least. We make food and have pot lucks to try to stoke a sense of community.”

The Porchistas believe in progressive politics, caring about the environment, and using music to bring people together. They blend genres and combine grooves, lyrics, and melodies seamlessly to create music that’s entirely unique to them. With songs like “Mr. Chump,” a diss track aimed unapologetically at The Orange Menace (our president, Donald Trump – and it makes me shudder to type the words), The Porchistas are real and honest, and they aren’t afraid to make a stand and shout for what they believe in. The track list for Axis and Allies promises more political tunes like “Ebolabama,” and “Mischief Night” tells the story of a local hit man while taking aim at the current political climate in America.

Check out “Mischief Night” and “Mr. Chump” up above. Keep your eye out for the release of the EP soon, and keep up with The Porchistas on social media for any more forthcoming announcements!

'We're Still Here' From Above the Moon To Aid Planned Parenthood

One of The Hook's long time favorites, Above The Moon, recently released a brand new single, "We're Still Here."

The track was released on January 20th, the inaugural day of 45th President, Donald Trump. As the country rightfully begins to protest against the seemingly hostile new president, Above The Moon has spent their time wisely - introducing a new track for listeners, and the best part is that all of the proceeds from the single will be donated to Planned Parenthood!

Check out a stream of it below!

The anthemic track highlights some of the misconceptions that have risen from the election, and is a validating quietude of reminding "him that you're here, we don't have much to fear anymore."

This one is for a good cause, so definitely check out Above The Moon and donate for a good reason!

Psychocide Drop New Music Video

Psychocide, the rock band with a bit of a punk twist (don’t get them confused with punk-rock or pop-punk), have dropped their latest music video for the song “Paranoia” in anticipation of their upcoming album Alcohol & Bad Decisions, which is due out March 3, 2017. The Canadian rockers have been hard at work recording with master engineer Christian Cummings (U2, Blink 182, The Used), and “Paranoia”  represents a significant shift forward for the band.

The song itself strikes a perfect balance of hard rock and punk influences and puts on full display the outfit’s angsty ferocity. The video, while it represents an interesting concept, feels a bit disjointed from the track. That’s not to say that the video is bad, in fact, the cinematography and actual video quality are quite refreshing, but it just feels like there is a video that has this song playing in the background; neither one holds significant meaning for the other….yet.

Alcohol & Bad Decisions can be thought of as somewhat of a concept album. The record is going to tell the stories of a variety of different characters that will all eventually come together and star in a future comic book. Knowing this makes the somewhat ambiguous nature of the music video for “Paranoia” interesting and exciting.

With their new album dropping in a couple of months be sure to keep an eye out for all things Psychocide via their social media, and of course here at The Hook!

FRTNK Release New Single

Los Angeles' own alternative hip-hop duo FRTNK (Fourteen K) released their brand new track, "Aqua" via TeamBackPack this week.

The sentiment behind the song is to live care free, and be happy despite the struggles you may face. The band explains,  "it's a playful track that's meant to ignite that childlike feeling in all of us. From the playful melody to shouting out the vowels, how we can combat our adulthood is by reigniting the simplicity of just living in the now like we did when we were kids."

Stream it down below!

"Aqua" is a song about letting go of the struggles in life and allowing yourself to be happy. The band elaborates, "Aqua" is one of the singles leading to the band's forthcoming EP, to be announced soon.

FRTNK (pronounced "Fourteen K") is an American alternative hip-hop group hailing from the greater Los Angeles area, known as the Inland Empire. Formed by artists Benjamin Aragbaye, Bryan Ramos and Barin Butler, the group's musical style joins the electronic sounds of rock and Neo-RnB, while seamlessly merging it with heavy 808's and groovy synthesizers. Each being only in their early twenty's, their daring dream-like production laid with raps and harmonies has already generated comparisons to world renowned musicians like Outkast, Kanye West, The Neptunes, and The Gorillas. This book-smart, skater-type band has been studying music since they were in elementary school and they've found some way to blend and mesh opposing musical genres effortlessly. Their first official recorded work, Operation AU, was released in November 2011. This six track EP and their follow-up freshman project Moreno Beachhave peaked the interest of many indie & major labels in America and overseas, FRTNK's songs "Imagine" and "Can I Love You" landing on the desk of Director Issa Rae. FRTNK has been working diligently in their California home studio recording and producing for themselves & other artists.

Head to TeamBackPack today to check out FRTNK's latest track, "Aqua." Follow FRTNK online for new music, updates, and more.

VERIDIA Release Haunting Music Video

On tour now with Evanescence, VERIDIA is excited to share their newest, haunting music video for their track, "Still Breathing."

The video was directed by Matt DeLisi, the director behind their previous video for "Pretty Lies" and filmed at a haunted house located in the band's hometown of Nashville. The group is currently on tour with Evanescence and at work on an upcoming 2017 full-length.

Check it out below!

"Still Breathing" shares the important message of dealing with fear, something frontwoman Deena Jakoub's deals with on personal level and is portrayed in the music video.

"I don't write because I have all the answers or because I want everyone to think I'm in this really good place," says Jakoub. "In fact, I am struggling, I am still healing, I am human. 'Still Breathing' was written to say, I feel you, we're all struggling through something, and though there are some things we may solely have to endure on our own, we don't have to process it alone.

This song was birthed out of fear and grew into an anthem of strength and conquering for me. I have a chronic illness that takes fear to the next level, and when I am over-stressed, anxiety and panic chase me down no matter how fast I run. What I've recently learned and keeps me going, is to actually slow down and find something to be grateful for in that day, in that moment. When I wrote this song, my gratitude was literally focused on being alive, having been given a chance to breathe another breath into the day. Sometimes all you need is a shift in perspective.

Vulnerability can be painful, but I think it’s worth it if someone else can be empowered by what you’ve endured. I share because I hope that someone finds strength through what I’ve learned in my weakness. "

As we said above, VERIDIA is currently on tour with Evanescence until November 23rd! For more news, check out their social media links below!

Trophy Eyes Mash Up Punk Scene With "Chemical Miracle"

Foo Fighters meets Taking Back Sunday meets Circa Survive in Trophy Eyes’s new album “Chemical Miracle”. The Australian alternative punk 5 piece master their heavy-duty sound and stay original doing it. We all know bands in this genre who tend to mask the lack of songwriting ability with overbearing cymbals aggressive distortion. Trophy Eyes distance themselves from these flaws by keeping the vocals crisp and upfront. Upon first listen, the untrained ear can distinguish nearly every word over the angry chords. A forewarning though, this album is much grimmer than you think.

Opening on quite a melancholy note is “Chlorine.” It depicts a story of two unlikely friends, one saving the other from drowning only to take his own life sometime in the future. The song drips with furious sadness as the singer wonders if his friend knew what he meant to him. The lyrics convey the message of thinking twice before taking that awful step. The following track “Counting Sheep” keeps up an anti-suicide motif as singer John Floreani shouts that often people underestimate how the smallest words can prevent tragedy.

Despite the heavy storylines to these songs, there’s no need to be turned off from the sadness of the lyrics. The instrumentals just don’t seem to contain those bleak feelings. The grim themes turn a little brighter in “Breath You In”: a song about the moment of lying together with your S.O. and literally breathing them in(don’t worry, the song isn’t that creepy). Coupled with a kitschy and funny music video, this track is certainly the gem of the album.

The feeling of not belonging is exemplified in the song “Home Is.” It describes the nomad lifestyle of a young runaway as he searches for solace at the bottom of a bottle. Despite his self-loathing and endless search to belong to something, he feels most at home when he’s lost.

This album is filled with tight snare hits and some expertly timed, pensive guitar riffs. The songwriting is a refreshing notch above most alternative bands and one can find enjoyment in actually listening to the lyrics as opposed to just jumping around at their warped tour appearances. They drive home the theme of not taking life for granted but at the same time address the problems that make people feel isolated and alone. You’ll feel just as comfortable listening to this album on a lonely nighttime jog as you would on the ride home from work on Friday.

The album definitely deserves a few spins and it’s exciting to see a band with this much potential.

New Single out from PUBLIC

Like a cleaned up version of surf rock, Public releases their latest single "Perfect". Sounding like a band opening for 311, the simple lyrics and beach club riffs make this song ideal for freshman move in day or perhaps the playlist in your favorite chain burrito restaurant. It comes off as a “feel good jam” with a cleaned reggae theme begging you to turn up the bass on that new stereo your parents bought you.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, this song actually does have an admirable message: Paying tribute to the problems of low self-esteem in a woman’s image. Singer John Vaughn croons to his girlfriend(s) that they’re perfect to him, no matter what, just the way they, no matter the shape and size. Its a tribute done a bit generically, but nevertheless goes against the beauty standards we accept via the Kardashian-esque Instagram pages.

When listening to a theme that’s been beaten into submission over the past few years, you cant help but roll your eyes at his breathy voice as he assures her she doesn’t have to worry about looking perfect because (Yup, you guessed it!) she’s already perfect to him. Just because they incorporate a popular theme doesn’t make them memorable. The track is worth a listen, and the quaffed-haired trio may eventually find originality, but don’t expect to hear from this band anytime soon.

This song is one of three singles they will release before debuting their winter LP.

The Creatures In Secret Share Music Video

The Creatures In Secret have a new music video for their track “Texas Red” and it is brutal!

This track is off of their first full length album which was released earlier this year. They worked extensively with Yanic Bercier of WaveTransform Studios on this new record. This dark music video compliments the track well with a charcoal autumn backdrop. The track drives with a great pounding beat with a memorable and melodic chorus.

Check out the video below!

According to Guitarist Allen Cox, “We are very excited to be releasing this new music video for 'Texas Red' off of our debut album "The Gathering". This song is about the struggle between an abusive father and his family, from the perspective of the son. He wishes to just hold a strong relationship with his father, but worst comes to worst, and he learns he needs to leave the situation. The lyrics discuss the process of "hell" the young man goes through, while learning he can and will have a better life.”

TCIS, as they have been dubbed, have a great energy that can only truly be experienced in their live performance. Their sound and style can be compared to that of As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red and others like Green Day and Fall Out Boy. These guys cannot be ignored. They guys can be found on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Deadfellow Shares "I Dreamed I Lost My Girl" Music Video

Deadfellow (On Set) 1.jpg

Indie artist Deadfellow entered the remaining moments of summer with a new music video for listeners – a teaser, if you will, for the upcoming "tongue-in-cheek" EP, Love Songs for the Contemporary Listener

Directed by Nahir Francis, the video itself is the keeper of quiet images– somber, and serene. Deadfellow’s voice carries a powerful feeling of sadness, loss and remembrance through scenes of recollection, and familiarity. This video felt personal; secretive, but it reminded me of my own experiences - of human experiences, even.

Maybe perfect for this period of transition, from summer to fall, the video is a piece that highlights the track “I Dreamed I Lost My Girl,” which explores a few different concepts that Deadfellow seems to focus on naturally – a production of an age we live in. Deadfellow calls it “the Tinder Age, where even phone calls have become uncomfortably intimate,” and that’s most definitely the vibe we felt watching this video – gooey, uncomfortable, lonely even.

But, you can check out the video for yourself below!

What’s it like to lose a loved one, to imagine loss, to be alone?

I’m a sure question we’ve all wondered – at home alone, cooking for ourselves, also half drunk and unsure. This music video was perfect for “I Dreamed I Lost My Girl,” all at once sublime and ethereal, but still living and breathing in the quiet moments.

But, maybe the most interesting thing about this track and it's music video, is that Hayden (Deadfellow, ah we ruined the secret) finds them both "hilarious," for reasons completely unknown. And hey, that's ok too.

Deadfellow is also staying up to date with shows, and you can check out some of those dates below!

Deadfellow Show Dates:
September 9th // Chaplin's Spring City, PA (All Ages)
September 24th // Dewey Beach Music Conference (Jimmy's Grille Stage, All Ages)

Do check out this music video, a Hook recommended piece, and definitely be prepared for Deadfellow’s EP, Love Songs for the Contemporary Listener, out in November of this year. Until then, stay updated with Deadfellow via the social media links provided below!

Stages Streams New EP In Full

Imminence Records has been supporting some seriously talented up-and-coming bands as of late, including Pennsylvania’s own Perdition and French hardcore hellraisers No Jogging For Today, both of whom were recently covered by The Hook. One of its most recent catches, the Florida metalcore quintet Stages, is letting fans listen to their label debut EP entitled New War.

It can be enjoyed in its entirety right here

On this bite-sized EP, which came out on June 24th, Stages makes an effort to imbue their static brand of metalcore with experimentation, including using electronica to create atmosphere and melody and allowing the guitars to focus on pulverizing the listener with varied, sometimes hardcore-esque riffage.

According to vocalist Aaron Berkshire, the band is very happy to see the EP finally released, as the band waited a long time to release the material in order to ensure a polished final product. It shows throughout, from the tight structure of the songs to the superior production quality.

Stages also took the opportunity to release a list of tour dates that will bring them around their home state, with a stop in Georgia. The band will be supported by A Dying Breed.

Check out dates below!

This band will be busy and busting their asses to bring us prime progressive metalcore tunes, so keep an eye out for new activity. Pick the new EP up at iTunes and MerchNow, and feel free to follow them on their various social media accounts. As always, stay down-tuned for some metalcore mayhem!

The Centuries Share Music Video Ft. Brandon Sidney

Straight out of Ukraine, The Centuries shared a music video back in May that featured Brandon Sidney (Palisades)!

The music video was released for their track, "Inside Of Me," and vocalist Eugene Lesnevsky had this to say, "The music video, directed by Alex Pimenov of Move Film, perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the song, along with elaborating the story with new details. The song is based on the story of the inner struggle of a person, who got lost doubting himself and searching for the way out. Whom is he engaged with in his dialogue? Maybe it's himself responding? Or a close friend? Or maybe another unwitting witness? Everyone will hear their own story,"

Check out the music video below!

Brandon Sidney had this to say on working with The Centuries, "It was great working with these guys! Definitely have the potential to take over the US market. Keep your eye out for them!"

To Be A King Releases Single

Virginia metalcore outfit To Be A King released their single "New Horizon" back in May, and the single is the second track to be released off of their upcoming EP via Immenence Records.

To Be A King has origins in 2014, and started out as a deathcore/horrorcore group that quickly rose up the ranks. The band released their debut EP entitled Fear Not, also in 2014, and it featured influences from deathcore and Metalcore, while also incorporating Symphonic Metal as well as a positive message.

The band then hit troubled waters through 2015 that saw a lineup change, as well as a new direction for their sound. The band’s new single, which will appear on their forthcoming EP, showed the band coming out with a more melodic hardcore sound, and a group of solidified musicians ready to pick up where they left off at the end of 2014!

Check out "New Horizon" below!

Vocalist Jonathon Butler had this to say about all of the news: “Best part of this for me is someone will finally hear something I'm a part of. I have been doing music for a long time and never really truly got anything published. Feels good to know someone is going to be listening to something I'm a part of.”

Louder Than Quiet Releases New Video

Maryland based Louder Than Quiet released a new video for their single “Gypsies R Us."  Check it out here!

The African-American five-piece group was inspired by the many issues they have dealt with due to their skin color. The single examines racial injustice, an extremely prevalent topic in the United States today. Vocalist, Ali Rezghi, found lyrical inspiration from the trauma her mother faced after losing their family house, causing them to be referred to as gypsies.

This powerful music video examines both the troubles minorities experience day after day through lyricism and picture. The instrumentals give a heavy soundtrack to this sad story and serve as a refreshing reminder that genre and race do not go hand in hand. Heavy music doesn't examine this subject often.

Since 2010 these guys have been tearing it up in their local scene opening up for acts such as Thy Art Is Murder, iwrestledabearonce, and Dance Gavin Dance. With this great video, directed by Scott Hansen, these guys hope for more exposure into a bigger scene. They hope to branch out of their Washington D.C area punk and move onto a more metal direction.

Their first EP, with help from Chelsea Grin and Wretched, is expected to earn them a larger fanbase, showing off a heavier sound. The band looked to Jamie King, recording engineer, to make that possible. The EP is set to debut on the anniversary of the Michael Brown shooting.

Please check these guys out. The video alone is worth your attention. Links to the video, the track, and social media are below! Stay brutal!
