Jesea Lee Releases Dreamy New Acoustic Single "Great Lakes"

Photographer: Andrew Wells

Photographer: Andrew Wells

Cleveland-based indie pop songwriter Jesea Lee has released the third single from is upcoming debut EP, Sleepspent. "Great Lakes" is an acoustic track about Lee's fiancé and tells a dreamy story of one's willingness to endure anything to keep the person they love safe.

Check out the stream below!

"While recording my new EP I had three tracks done and it felt incomplete, like I needed to have a fourth song and I knew I wanted it to be an intimate acoustic track," says Lee. "When I sat down to write this song I had just gotten engaged, so the words poured out of me pretty quickly. After I recorded the guitar and vocals, it felt a little too simple, so my buddy Lance and I spent hours creating all these weird ambient sounds with feedback and different amps. I think it really adds to the mood and atmosphere of the song."

Pre-order Sleepspent now on iTunes or Bandcamp and get an instant download of the EP's first single "TV Glow." Definitely check out the new track, and then check out Lee's social media to keep up with his upcoming release!

New Single from Amanda Markley ft. Will Pugh

Seattle songwriter Amanda Markley has released a new single, called “Ways to Go,” a year after debuting her self-titled EP. The new track features Cartel frontman Will Pugh, who also produced the song.

Check it out below!

“Ways to Go” is about relationships: the ups and downs, the highs and lows, and the journeys people take together to grow and change. Recording the single was the first time Markley and Pugh worked together, and Markley says it “has a good message because it’s about getting through the ups and downs of a relationship and how life is always a journey.”
Her own life has certainly been a journey. Markley wasn’t always a singer. She used to ride horses, but after a devastating spinal injury (I’ve been there – it sucks) she had to scale back on her passion for horseback riding and channel her emotion into something else. She coped with her injury by writing in a journal, which lead to her inspiration for writing music. And since then, she’s come a long way. Markley strives to inspire people to follow their dreams, which is the foremost message in many of her lyrics. “Ways to Go” may be about relationships, but it also encompasses Markley’s passion for embracing life and all that comes with it.
Listen to “Ways to Go” through the exclusive release with Substream Magazine, and keep up with Amanda Markley on social media for more updates from the soulful singer.

Hayride Casualties Release Single "Coal Fired Train"

A throbbing heartache, a cry for help, and it's the world that needs saving - that's the basis of the new single "Coal Fired Train" by Brooklyn indie folk-rock outfit Hayride Casualties.

Premiered on GroundSounds earlier this week, it's a direct reflection of the current state of our world; from an environmental, political and social perspective. "Coal Fired Train" comes off the band's upcoming album Fossil Fuel Kid, out June 9th.

Check it out below!

"I think for anyone paying attention to what’s happening in the world right now, it’s hard not to feel hopeless, and it’s this constant battle to stay optimistic," shared vocalist Daniel DeWald. "'Coal Fired Train' explores those moments of burnout when you give in and just let the darkness completely overtake you. Hopefully those moments are temporary, but it’s good to know you’re not the only one feeling that way."

Cool Philly Bands Record Cool Songs

It's always fun seeing your favorite local music, and it's even more fun when your favorite local artists come together to create a kick ass compilation album featuring some of their favorite covers!

George Valdivia is to thank for the culmination of the cover compilation, as he brought together (whether by chance or fate) some of Philadelphia's top notch local DIY artists! Musicians like Curtis Cooper, Stavi, Witch H(c)unt, and Kevin Brusha of Cerulean Blue all came together to share their favorite tracks, and take it from us, it's really stinkin' good.

Check out a quick recap of the tracklist below!

Check out George's experience with creating this project, "My "Fostex 160 multitracker" is what I used for the whole thing. I've recorded 2 solo albums under the name "Georgey V" and by the end of the 2nd album, I started to realize that I wasn't to bad at doing this whole recording thing. I started thinking "Hey why don't I record my friends on this and see what they would sound like" it later became the idea of having them pick out a cover they enjoyed to play/listen to/favorite song. I started with recording Kevin Brusha of "Cerulean Blue" at the now "Overlook Hotel" it was fun! Recording someone else who wasn't me. Later through the night I said hell let's record a couple more people at this house because they're very talented in there own unique way. So I ended up recording Forest Ranger, I recorded his song in one take. I micd his acoustic guitar that's 4 string [I believe] and he just played. Lina Xinos now going by the name (Stavi) just so happened to be there so I recorded them as well. A week or so past and I decided to record Branden Bauer, this session was kinda more relaxed and a very fun time. Time went by and Curtis Cooper messaged me asking to record something on my 4 track. I told Curtis what I was doing, and they said they wanted to be apart of it."

"This was exciting because I really enjoy Curtis's music and when I started going to basement shows Curtis was one of the first people who I saw perform. My girlfriend and I came to his house at the "all night diner" for me to record him. We spent from 12 in the afternoon till 4 recording, this was a very interesting time because I felt like this was the first time I really got to know Curtis as a person. Super nice sweet person and obviously very talented! For example as we were talking about how we would record, Curtis would be noodling on the guitar completely paying attention to what I was saying and having responses. (I definitely can't do that lol) anyway the whole thing was very interesting watching Curtis play each instrument and when it finally came time to record vocals it was incredible hearing Curtis change with his powerful dynamics. Next I started to record my song because hey I wanted to be apart of this thing too hahah I chose the song Adeline by Dr. Dog because I love Dr. Dog and if you ever listen to the album "toothbrush" the whole thing was recorded on a 4 track so I kinda thought to myself I have to do it heh heh. Last I recorded Dori of "Witch H(c)unt" at the "all night diner" as well. This was nice to record because this was the first time I've recorded someone with a banjo. We spent an hour or two to record. This is pretty much it for the recording aspect the only thing I wish I've done was record the band "Fred Beans" but it just didn't happen and by the end of everything my 4 track kinda kicked the bucket. Next I took it to be mixed and mastered by Tim Jordan of "Sun Organ" veeerrrry cool guy. When we finished we drank two 6 packs and just shared music with each other and hung out."

Definitely stream the album above on bandcamp, and check out all of these really cool, local artists who are all giving their own unique flare to each track on this quirky EP. That's a Hook recommendation!

Mansell Release New Video, 'Ghost'

Three-piece indie rock band Mansell recently released a music video for their single “Ghost,” which comes off their new album Mantra. Mantra landed a spot on the iTunes Top 100 Alt Chart, and “Ghost” is one of eight songs on the album that shows why Mansell deserved the spot. The music video for the song was brought into existence by a friend of the band, John Gray, who came up with the concept for the video and helped bring it to life. On working with John, Mansell vocalist Holden Fincher said, “We all feel like kin to one another, so the understanding and chemistry there on multiple levels was a comfort in letting another artist interpret your music emotionally the way John did.”
The location for the music video was an abandoned denim factory in Georgia, which fits with the dreamy vibe of the song. Creating the video was a project that involved family, friends, and other artists close to Mansell, and Holden Fincher describes the finished product as being “like a Basquiat and Warhol collab or salty fries with a chocolate shake.”
You can listen to the full album Mantra on iTunes and Spotify, and watch the music video for “Ghost” down below.

Neck Deep Announces Highly Anticipated Album

Well known UK Pop Punkers Neck Deep have announced their upcoming studio album, The Peace and The Panic, which will be released on August 18th via Hopeless Records
The 11 track release, which was produced by Mike Green(previous works included bands such as Pierce the Veil and Paramore) is described by the band to be “a meditation on the constant duality of life and the struggles that come with it. It comes blessed with an acknowledgement that seizing the day and having a laugh with your mates is important, but so is the personal growth that comes with pain and existential crisis.” Additionally,, vocalist Ben Barlow had this to say about the album, "It's not all 'Let's have a party and grab a beer' this time, but I wouldn't say it's pessimistic, just realistic. Trying to make something of your life is a big theme on this record, as is dealing with depression and anxiety. We've all found ourselves in the last few years and grown up a bit. I've had to do a lot of soul-searching and maybe I've been hardened by life a little bit, but I feel ready to take on the world again, just in a different way."

The Peace And The Panic - Track Listing:
1. Motion Sickness
2. Happy Judgement Day
3. In Bloom
4. 19 Seventy Sumthin'
5. Parachute
6. Don't Wait (ft. Sam Carter)
7. Heavy Lies
8. Critical Mistake

New Single “Allegiance” from VISTA

Anthem rock group VISTA is back once again with a new single, called “Allegiance.” This new track follows the previously released “Henchmen” and stands as the lead song from VISTA’s upcoming EP, due for release later this summer.

The message of “Allegiance” is about calling for fans of the band to join their own personal allegiances, and like most musicians, VISTA wants their fans to find a safe space in their music. VISTA is a combination of lead vocalist Hope Vista and guitarist/singer Greg Almeida, and “Allegiance” shows off their chemistry in performing together.

“Allegiance” goes hand in hand with “Henchmen,” the themes of both songs blend together in a way that makes it clear the full EP will have a larger connecting theme, as well. The band offered this statement about the new single: “’Allegiance’ picks up pretty much right where our last single ‘Henchmen’ left off, as the last single was an anthem of oppression. This is an anthem of resistance and banding together.”

Revolution is where it’s at, and “Allegiance” screams it. With their music, VISTA carves out their own sub-genre in the alternative scene: anthem rock. They’re all about making music that people can get behind, music that will make people rally, music that makes people want to stand for something.

“Allegiance” is a powerhouse track that speaks to a worthy cause. Listen to it down below, and stay connected with VISTA on social media for more updates on when their full EP will be released.

HOLDN Releases Aaliyah Cover Video

Iconic and never-forgotten R&B legend, Aaliyah, has been given new life in HOLDN’s cover for her song “Are You That Somebody.” HOLDN’s previous release before this cover was her single “BURN,” and it introduced Gina Petro’s dark pop alter-ego to the world.

HOLDN is innovative, electric, and mysterious, a completely different side to Gina Petro, whose previous musical experience falls more on the side of alternative rock. HOLDN is something special, proven in the way she brings emotion to her music. Her inspiration comes from a place of negativity that she spins into a positive.

She says, “I’ve been kicked when I’m down over and over again more than I’d like to admit while trying to create and make my first step back into music. This writing process allowed me to channel all of the inspiration I’ve gained from being suppressed, silenced, talked down to, denied, and disrespected. This is my safe place within an unsafe place where everyone is looking to take what they can from you and run away with it, but I hope to provide an unconditional safe place for others to turn to in my music.”

Her “Are You That Somebody Video” is only a small insight into what HOLDN is all about, and it’s a special treat for longtime fans of Aaliyah (may she rest in peace). Check it out, and look out for more releases from HOLDN as she continues to make a name for herself in the pop world.

Dryjacket Shares New Music Video

Dryjacket has released a new music video for their song “Patron Without Funds,” exclusively with Paste Magazine. The song comes off the band’s debut album For Posterity, which was released in January and is available for streaming and purchase now. The video for “Patron Without Funds” was shot in New York City and directed by Josh Coll.

If you’ve never heard of Dryjacket before, they’re a New Jersey indie band who joined Yellowcard on their farewell tour last October (RIP Yellowcard! “Ocean Avenue” will always and forever be a jam). For Posterity, their first album and a promising debut, “documents a series of unfavorable events that led to a pretty tough year,” says vocalist and guitarist Joe Junod. Despite the unfortunate circumstances the album describes, the band is extremely happy with the final product, and they look forward to be able to continue making honest music for their fans.

The “Patron Without Funds” video portrays a Wall Street man who dreams big, and it sends a message to those of us who are wondering if we can really do the things we’ve always imagined. It’s inspiring and motivating, and it makes you want to go out and run after your dreams with determination.

Dryjacket includes Joe Junod, guitarist and vocalist Brad Wyllner, bassist and vocalist Ian Foley and drummer Adam Cerdan. If “Patron Without Funds” gets you hooked on the band, they’ve got an upcoming show in Philly! See them live at Johnny Brenda’s on June 16th along with bands Joy Riding and Sad Actor, and keep up with them on social media for more announcements. Watch the “Patron Without Funds” video through the link provided by Paste Magazine.

New Single from SØF Out Now

Spunky pop artist SØF has released a new single about amphetamines. Yes, that’s right, amphetamines. The song is called “The Rush,” a fitting title, and comes from the artist’s experiences in college, when she noticed her classmates start to get wrapped up in the workings of a drug-fueled society.

“The Rush” follows the release of three other singles in 2017, and it continues SØF’s ambition of trying to break away from the teen pop persona she had in the younger days of her career. The new single is catchy and fast-paced, and the subject matter is certainly distinctive from SØF’s other music.

Check it out here, and check out "Ghosts" previously released below!

About the song, SØF said, “I really wanted to write about something different and give myself a challenge.” With “The Rush,” she breaks away from her typical songs about love and relationships. She says it’s also her favorite song lyrically, which makes it worth listening to. SØF blends genres and has a knack for singing fast and rapping, as well as remaining unique and unapologetically herself in the world of mainstream pop.

She’s one to watch out for in the future.

Give “The Rush” a listen below, and you can also check out some of her other previously released singles.

New Album and North American Tour Announcements from Hexheart

Seattle post-punk artist Hexheart has announced the release of their debut album, Midnight On A Moonless Night. The first single off the album, “A Thousand Times,” premiered on The Huffington Post, which you can listen to down below. Hexheart’s North American tour will kick off on May 31st and end on June 22nd, from California to Oregon.

Hexheart was formed by Jasyn Bangert, formerly of EBM band God Module. Bangert needed an alternate outlet for his musical ideas that didn’t quite fit in with God Module, and Hexheart was the result. Alongside Andrew Pearson on synths and backing vocals and guitarist Patrick Hogan, Jasyn Bangert rounds out Hexheart with a strong core.

The band is inspired by influences both old and new like The Cure, Joy Division, Cold Cave, and She Wants Revenge, but they’ve got a sound that’s original and unique, combining darkwave and synth-pop electronics and melodic vocals. The tour dates can be seen above, and the album is available for preorder now!
