The Hook Launches: What Music Means To Me

Photographer: Rich Sanders

Photographer: Rich Sanders

We have spent a lot of time writing about music. Three years of our time, in fact, just writing about our friends, peers, colleagues, faceless emailers. We’ve loved every moment of it, but what does this all mean? We made it out of our terrible two’s, and we spent a lot of time refocusing our agenda on what’s important to us here at The Hook Journal.

Community is one of the biggest driving forces that we, as people who enjoy music, play music, make music, listen to music, archive music, would agree upon, right? What makes music this experience for all of us, no matter where we are in relation to it? Whether it’s behind a microphone, behind a camera, through headphones, in a packed basement in South Philly, a coffee bar in New Hampshire, an abandoned Warehouse in South Carolina, music gives us something to hold onto - so, we decided to ask about it.

What Music Means To Me is our forthcoming project that has been carefully asked of contributors all over the United States. The contributors are unique music creators, enjoyers, opinion havers, & art makers who identify all in different, creative & unique ways - ways that make them just them.

Music is one of the oldest art forms, and has been a constant source of power, of courage, of enlightment, of togetherness, of vulnerability - and we hope this project shows that. What Music Means To Me can be as abstract or as literal as human beings allow it, it can be in the form of words, of song, of art, of understanding and silence. We hope to create community by giving a platform to people, by giving the opportunity for others to feel understood, to give and receive empathy, to promote local music, and most of all to be meaningful humans.

Over the course of the next month and a half, beginning on April 10th, a new contributor’s story will post in the morning hours, and we hope that you read these stories, share these stories, take in these moments and apply them to What Music Means To You - and then let us know what you think, tell us your biggest fears, your highest moments, how to be better, who to listen to. What we want most of all from this project is a sense that people are heard, and this is a community that cares for every person, no matter how small or large their part - so, come be part of it with us!

Love,
The Hook Journal & Emily Famularo

Hannah Lorimer Celebrates Debut Single, 'Alive'

Photographer: Courtney Kehr

Photographer: Courtney Kehr

After tireless hard work & dedication, we are excited to announce the celebration of a debut release from Philadelphia’s own, Hannah Lorimer.

The Illinois native has been creating, performing and supporting local music & artists since 2013 here in Philadelphia - and has now, finally, put out her debut single, “Alive.” The track is sweet, sultry, and romantic in all ways that we’ve all always known & loved with Lorimer’s music. The singer & songwriter has really crafted something special & unique, which can be a feat in itself: a track that shows off Lorimer’s distinct sound.

Check it out below!

“Alive” is upbeat, but remains grounded in gentle lyricism, and the powerhouse that is Lorimer’s voice. There isn’t a single moment in the song where you’re questioning where Lorimer is bringing you. It feels confident, fluid & matured, as if Hannah herself knows that the content she is putting out is content that needs to be heard - and so, we hear it.

The 5-minute long track is what we hope is the first of many, whether that be more singles, or even a full album. Either way, Hannah Lorimer is always gigging here in Philadelphia, and we’ve included her social media down below so you never miss a beat!

Music Video Follows For Port Lucian Fans

unnamed.jpg

Back in November we covered Port Lucian’s first single, “Lucid Dreaming II,” a dreamy, love song for those romantic at heart. The recent Philadelphia transplant is making sure to pick up the pace as they debut the accompanying music video for “Lucid Dreaming II.”

The music video is just as soft as the track itself. A collection of retro images and graphics that stand idly by, being experienced. Enjoy it for yourself down below, debuting today!

The track: a layered collective of vocals & instrumentals lends itself perfectly to layered, tapered images of calm, and longing. Port Lucian has already proven the gravity of their emotions, as well as ours - and we’re ready for more. What’s to expect in the New Year for this newfound favorite!

Catch Up With Us: Puppy Angst Shares New Music in November

Philadelphia’s own Puppy Angst is swiftly moving onto the scene with their fuzzy, noisy sound sure to make you feel welcomed & in your feels.

The celebrated the end of 2018 by releasing their first full band track, “meet at the show.” Represented by Good How Are You Records, Puppy Angst had help from Dylan Kittrell at The Blank Space recording & mixing “meet at the show,” while the track was mastered by bassist Kyle O'Connor.

Check it out streaming below!

Having been released on November 16th, the track holds it’s own as an impressive & well constructed track that pulls at the heartstrings while also remaining easy to listen to. ASL Music Video Is Latest From With Confidence

Bands continue to take in the important of inclusivity as they move forward, and With Confidence has always been one step ahead.

"Moving Boxes," the third single from their recent album Love and Loathing, the band's second full length, out on Hopeless Records, was their pet project for this American Sign Language Friendly music video. The band worked with an ASL interpreter to create a really special video for fans to experience the song in a different, more inclusive way.

Check it out below!

A few months ago, With Confidence shared the original music video for "Moving Boxes,"and in June released "That Something".

"Moving Boxes" was written by guitarist Inigo Del Carmen, who said, "I think it's important for media/art to be accessible to everyone. Our goal is to create music for everyone to enjoy and lyrics that everyone has the opportunity to relate to. By doing a video in ASL, we can further immerse our fans who are hearing impaired and create an even bigger platform for some of the topics, such as mental health, that our music touches on. My best friend is hearing impaired and this is something we've talked about doing for awhile and now we've actually done it! Big thanks to Raquel for being an amazing teacher and helping us learn some ASL!”

Flounder Warehouse Shares 'Better Now' Music Video

28471204_2066288276720362_8964917263073209895_n.jpg

An ode to the freedom of life & love & music is Flounder Warehouses most recent endeavor with their music video, “Better Now.”

The fun loving band has a fun loving track, one that takes on the challenges of happiness, of pursuing something you love no matter what - and we can’t stop listening. The jazz infused pop track is an effortless listen which makes it easy to add to any playlist you’ve got going right now.

Check out the fiery tune devoted to life itself down below!

About the track, the band said, “This video is completely absurd --- a series of scenes in which I have the time of my life while doing silly things. At one point I dance with an enormous rubber ducky on the beach. It was really fun. The project came together when I was talking to my brother, Alex, on the phone and he said, "Let's do another music video." I had no idea about what, and I hadn't written a song in a year. So the prompt he gave me was: "Write a summer song that doesn't use the word 'just.'"

Turns out, I use "just" a lot in my songs. So that part was challenging. The rest was natural. It's the second video I've collaborated on with my brother, who is the videographer and director -- it's really special bringing our passions together into these projects. After watching this video, I hope people feel inspired to be themselves, spread good vibes always, and choose to live out their dreams no matter what.”

We feel pretty good, what about you? Check out the music video & spread some love with Flounder Warehouse! We’ve got their social media links down below!

The Catharsis of Bleeder & The Single Series

13645154_1025319994184544_6306569026974615077_n.jpg

The comeback stories of all comebacks, Bleeder is fluent in catharsis - and they’re using their new single series to highlight it.

After being born with hemophilia & then medically infected by HIV & Hepatitis C at age 10 - Shelby Smoak has a lot to talk about. After almost dying at 24 when the HIV had become AIDs, Shelby survived & wrote a book, but he wasn’t done there. Creating Bleeder meant creating another way to feel, and Bleeder has a lot to give.

Their most recent single, “Rose In The Rain” is the first of many from their new Single Series. Check out the music video down below to get a taste of this smooth folk rock vibe!

“Rose In The Rain” is an emotional slow down, allowing you into Bleeder’s frame of mind. An easy listen, the song is reminiscent of rock & folk. You can check out the track on Bleeder’s bandcamp, but otherwise you’ll definitely want to stay tuned as the Single Series begin to ramp up over the next few weeks!

Port Lucian's "Lucid Dreaming II" Easy To Get Lost In

Headshot 2.jpg

A recent transplant to Philadelphia, 18 year old Port Lucian is off to a smooth start in the city.

After releasing her first EP, Sun, and embracing pop to it’s fullest - Port Lucian uses their latest track to take a completely different path; but, we aren’t complaining! “Lucid Dreaming II” is exactly that. A bedroom pop anthem that pulls on layered reverb and a slowed down guitar. Remaining true to her admiration for unrequited love & cliché, Port Lucian is tantalizing listeners with “Lucid Dreaming II” as she gears up for a new EP.

Check out the track below!

The track is a dreamy, dusk anthem sure to make you feel something. This track is perfect as the nights grow longer & the days shorter.

As October rolls on by, Port Lucian is amping up for her single release on November 10th at Happy Dog on Euclid with The Last Great American Band, Perfect Girl and ES&Co. This is music you definitely don’t want to miss - to stay up to date, check out Port Lucian’s social media links below!

North Carolina 4-piece are celebrating their most recent release, “When I’m Lonely,” this week!

”When I'm Lonely" is the first look into their upcoming EP, due out later this year. After spending a year preparing for their upcoming release, MKNLY aims to showcase a more vulnerable side to their sound.

Check out the single below!

About the single, the band states, "“When I'm Lonely” is the title track for our upcoming EP release. This song truly encompasses the emotions of the one night stand mentality. Scared to be alone but yet at the same time completely scared to love or be with someone."

I The Victor's "Tongue & Stutter" Fall Jam You're Looking For

I The Victor are the Atlanta Based New Comers sure to rock your socks this Fall.

With a running start into the game this year including a tour with The Orphan The Poet, support shows with Vinyl Theatre and Vesperteen, a DIY west coast tour, and a handful of slots on Vans Warped Tour this past July. The solo project was created by Atlanta’s Rebecca Ramos, who co-produced “Tongue & Stutter” in addition to directing, writing & editing the music video.

Check out the music video below!

The track is the lead of three singles and videos to precede a new EP in early 2019.

About the single, Ramos states: “Tongue & Stutter is about individuality, really. We’ve been playing it live for a little bit and I always sum it up as a song about growth and making the intentional decision to be who you are and not be afraid of some of the risks that may come with that. I’ve grown so much since past ITV songs, I just wanted to write about not being as afraid to dive into the unknown, especially if the driving force is being more free and better off for it. There are dozens of little moments in the lyrics that mean the world to me or that exemplify little breakthroughs — not trusting a phone is in reference to my newfound disregard for social media and the numbers game, getting out of ‘the woods’ and into my own life instead of following people’s opinions and living for others, etc. I feel like Tongue & Stutter really led me through some growth I didn’t realize I needed; each section is it’s own little betterment of my headspace and that’s why I’m so excited to have it lead off this whole new era for I The Victor.”

FYKE Shares New Music Video

FYKE have been making huge gains as one of Universal Music Groups International Acts - and recently are celebrating the release of their music video for the single, “Till The End.” The track, much like others from FYKE, radiate a message highlighting social issues & positivity.

Comprised of Enik Lin, Steven Delman, Justin Wright, Mikee Fabella, and Gerard Christian, the band released their debut single "Favorite Mistake" in early 2017. Front man, Enik Lin, has produced/recorded and mixed all of the bands music with the support of Gene Gimaldi at Oasis Mastering.

Check out the music video for “Till The End” below!

Enik elaborates on the song, "'Till The End" is a song about dealing with anxiety and panic attacks. Anxiety disorders are estimated to affect 30 percent of adults (age 18-54) in America alone. almost half of that percentage is unreported due to misdiagnosis, people that choose not to seek help, and people that don't even know that they are currently suffering from an anxiety disorder. We wanted to write a song that brought attention to the symptoms of living with anxiety and the constant feeling of wanting to find a way to escape its grasp.”

Fit For A King's 'Oblivion' Reaches 1 Million Streams

Since their recently released album, Dark Skies, dropped, Fit For A King has been reaping the rewards. In under 1 week, the album has already surpassed 1 Million streams on Spotify, setting the band up for what could be the best first week in their 10-year history. To celebrate this achievement, featured track, “Oblivion,” now has an impressive music video to illustrate what we’ve all been feeling.

The emotional, heavy hitter of a track is musically and instrumentally unnerving. "Oblivion, on its own, is a very personal songs to me, but with this video, it's brought to a different level. The video shows how powerful forgiveness can be, and even when we don't think others deserve it, God does. This video definitely isn't for the faint of heart. But we believe it can show the power of forgiveness through the pain,” says the band of the music video, which you can check out below!

Dark Skies was produced and mixed by the legendary Drew Fulk (I Prevail, Motionless In White, Memphis May Fire.) Dark Skies is the band's evocative declaration of a hard won victory. "This album is far from happy. It's about personal struggles," explains singer Ryan Kirby.

Fit For A King will be hitting the road again next week when they join genre legends The Devil Wears Prada on their 10 Year Anniversary Tour of With Roots Above And Branches Below. Tour dates below!

John Whip's 'Electric Love' Debuts Today

Photographer: Steph Defeo @solidstares

Photographer: Steph Defeo @solidstares

Philadelphia local, John Whip, is celebrating today with the premiere of his latest single, and greatest effort, "Electric Love." The jazz infused-pop single is one listeners can easily fall in love with, and Whip creates an intimate scene for you to get lost in.

Whip is an impressive force, but the singer did have help putting "Electric Love" together, of course. With the help of his regular band as well as some outsourcing, "Electric Love" includes John Whip (keys, vocals, production), Sam Carlen -(guitars, bass, additional keys), Craig Hamilton - drums & percussion), Ilya Setrakian - (keys for Electric Love), and Henry Tirfe - (tenor sax for Electric Love).

Between Whip's smooth voice and tender lyricism, his band also follows suit in a defined, crisp manner to make this track a true delight and experience to listen to. We've got the exclusive premiere of the track, streaming here on The Hook only!

Check it out below!

Whip describes how "Electric Love" came to fruition for us, "I wrote this song after accidentally falling in love with someone.  The way we all do when someone just says the right thing or smiles at you the perfect way.  They way that maybe we all think we shouldn’t because there are so many options and reasons to be alone. I knew I didn’t want it to be a jazz song though as that would limit my possibilities in a commercial world, but I knew that if I sung it a certain way and packaged the song a certain way, it could be pop - but still a different kind of pop.

I've just fallen in love with a lot of guys and wanted to explore what that means and who that makes me in the world we live in.

I just wanted people to relate to that other side of hookup culture that we don’t sing about. The part when we catch feelings / usually the worst part because feelings aren't always reciprocated ya know?"

Of course we relate to that, and "Electric Love" is the perfect song to put on while getting over those post hookup blues. John Whip should have lots more to give us if this is what he's already putting out - polished, professional work.
