The Hook Launches: What Music Means To Me

Photographer: Rich Sanders

Photographer: Rich Sanders

We have spent a lot of time writing about music. Three years of our time, in fact, just writing about our friends, peers, colleagues, faceless emailers. We’ve loved every moment of it, but what does this all mean? We made it out of our terrible two’s, and we spent a lot of time refocusing our agenda on what’s important to us here at The Hook Journal.

Community is one of the biggest driving forces that we, as people who enjoy music, play music, make music, listen to music, archive music, would agree upon, right? What makes music this experience for all of us, no matter where we are in relation to it? Whether it’s behind a microphone, behind a camera, through headphones, in a packed basement in South Philly, a coffee bar in New Hampshire, an abandoned Warehouse in South Carolina, music gives us something to hold onto - so, we decided to ask about it.

What Music Means To Me is our forthcoming project that has been carefully asked of contributors all over the United States. The contributors are unique music creators, enjoyers, opinion havers, & art makers who identify all in different, creative & unique ways - ways that make them just them.

Music is one of the oldest art forms, and has been a constant source of power, of courage, of enlightment, of togetherness, of vulnerability - and we hope this project shows that. What Music Means To Me can be as abstract or as literal as human beings allow it, it can be in the form of words, of song, of art, of understanding and silence. We hope to create community by giving a platform to people, by giving the opportunity for others to feel understood, to give and receive empathy, to promote local music, and most of all to be meaningful humans.

Over the course of the next month and a half, beginning on April 10th, a new contributor’s story will post in the morning hours, and we hope that you read these stories, share these stories, take in these moments and apply them to What Music Means To You - and then let us know what you think, tell us your biggest fears, your highest moments, how to be better, who to listen to. What we want most of all from this project is a sense that people are heard, and this is a community that cares for every person, no matter how small or large their part - so, come be part of it with us!

Love,
The Hook Journal & Emily Famularo

Fit For A King's 'Oblivion' Reaches 1 Million Streams

Since their recently released album, Dark Skies, dropped, Fit For A King has been reaping the rewards. In under 1 week, the album has already surpassed 1 Million streams on Spotify, setting the band up for what could be the best first week in their 10-year history. To celebrate this achievement, featured track, “Oblivion,” now has an impressive music video to illustrate what we’ve all been feeling.

The emotional, heavy hitter of a track is musically and instrumentally unnerving. "Oblivion, on its own, is a very personal songs to me, but with this video, it's brought to a different level. The video shows how powerful forgiveness can be, and even when we don't think others deserve it, God does. This video definitely isn't for the faint of heart. But we believe it can show the power of forgiveness through the pain,” says the band of the music video, which you can check out below!

Dark Skies was produced and mixed by the legendary Drew Fulk (I Prevail, Motionless In White, Memphis May Fire.) Dark Skies is the band's evocative declaration of a hard won victory. "This album is far from happy. It's about personal struggles," explains singer Ryan Kirby.

Fit For A King will be hitting the road again next week when they join genre legends The Devil Wears Prada on their 10 Year Anniversary Tour of With Roots Above And Branches Below. Tour dates below!

Beshiba Anticipates New Album With New Single

Photography: Jacob Williamson

Photography: Jacob Williamson

South Carolina's very own, Beshiba, is celebrating the upcoming release of their sophomore EP, Worthless, by sharing the second single off of the November 4th release! The song, "F.E.L" features a guest spot from Garett Hood, the vocalist/drummer of Guerrilla Warfare.

Check out the track below streaming for free on Bandcamp!

According to Beshiba, "The basis of the song came from the chant, which is rooted from the perspective of being an outcast from society and refusing to conform to the standards of every day life to which the mainstream imposes on you. It's about being a dreamer and looking beyond every day life and those precedents & values which are forced on you, and using your anger as a driving force to push through all that to achieve & get what you want out of life. On the other hand, the other parts of the song reference suburban kids who had everything handed to them on a golden plate who never really experienced hardship or poor upbringing, but try to pretend like they know what struggle is."

esides the anticipation of Worthless, Beshiba also recently announced a November tour, we've provided dates below! In the meantime, the single is available for free download on our Bandcamp as well as on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, & Google Play!

No Such Animals Share Brand New Music Video

New Jersey locals No Such Animals have been hard at work creating new music, and are stoked to finally share a brand new music video with listeners and fans alike!

A music video for their single, "Sold" is in anticipation of their forthcoming EP, "Create T.V." and an all at once emotional, groovy, easy listen. The video is mostly distorted images of the band playing, which feels right. They remind me a little bit of a more chill The Bravery.

Check out the video below!

No Such Animals is a project spearheaded by vocalist and guitarist Ryan Romanowski, which has culminated over many years of cassette tape recordings and and private late night bleacher performances. Driven by nostalgia and recognizing the timelessness of early rock music, the band has breached the surface when the three remaining members, Mike Cavalli, Mike Roshe and Bill Grainger discovered something special by chance through social media.

Upcoming shows for No Such Animals can be found below!
July 28 – Bayville, NJ at Fubar
August 4 – Manhattan, NY at Connolly’s Klub 45 w/ Hat Trixx. The Commotions

You should stick around for their upcoming EP release, and check out No Such Animals' social media below to keep up!

New Single Out Now From CONS

Arizona Hardcore 5-piece, CONS, have recently announced their debut EP, Slowhealer, due out August 11th. Recorded, produced, and mixed by Beau Burchell (Saosin, It Prevails, Emery), Slowhealer captures the angst of a band having gone through the death of their friends and both the regrets and triumphs of growing up disenfranchised in a small desert city.

In anticipating for the album, CONS shared a brand new single, "The Burden of Knowing Why" which was released originally on Metal Underground. Check it out streaming via youtube below!

Talley expands on the importance of the record by stating, "We recorded Slowhealer almost 2 years ago and had plans to self release and basically give it away just to get our music out there. That being said we couldn't be more honored and stoked to release this through Revival. It brings a sense of validation to what we've been working so hard on, to have a great label show interest and pick up the reins and give it the proper release that we feel it deserves. Thank you to everyone involved in this with us. We can't wait to get this out there and get to work."

Stay tuned for more from CONS!

Fathom Farewell Release Their New Video Take This World

Fathom Farewell is a rock ‘n roll/blues-core band based out of Worcester, Massachusetts, and they have just released the music video for their song “Take This World” off their new EP, Decomposition.

Check it out below!

The band had a little something to say about the video, “We put a whole lot of time into this song and video combined. Fathom Farewell was a somewhat different band when we initially recorded the song, yet throughout the process of building this work we have the pleasure of presenting to you today, we have grown into something that we believe will make a difference for people craving a response to the environment in which we currently reside. Our aim with this video is to let people know that we are all in this together, we all suffer, we all crave the next step or something that can truly satisfy whatever gap may be left inside of us, and we all inevitably struggle together.”

That last sentence really gets me. “We all crave something that can truly satisfy whatever gap may be left inside of us.” We all want something to fill the void. At least I know I do. And sometimes the best way to fill that void is with music.

You can listen to “Take This World” and watch the video through the link. Fathom Farewell also has a couple of live shows coming up, so be sure to follow them on social media for updates.

Stargazer Share New Single & Music Video

Stargazer are back on the scene, and they're ready to make waves. The band has announced their debut full length -Tui La- coming this Summer, and is leading the big news with a brand new music video for the first single, "Temple of Solace."

Check it out below!

Old time fans will find a step up from the band's previous EP, while newcomers have a whole lot to discover. Anyone familiar with The Contortionist's latest album, Devin Townsend or even TesseracT will recognize some of Stargazer's influences and is bound to find something to keep them tied in until the album drops.

Matt Copp (vocals), opened up about the track: "Temple of Solace has some of the oldest riffs we've ever written, stretching back to before Stargazer was even a band. Slow and expressive, it has a very different weight than the rest of our material. It's about becoming lost in the struggle to escape the demons that pursue us, when sometimes we're the ones chasing ourselves in prisons we build."

Midwayer Streaming 'Never Together' EP In Full

Georgia melodic metalcore outfit Midwayer is back with their sophomore release on the label. The concept EP, entitled Never Together, is now streaming in full. It features six new tracks and a special bonus track for the longtime fans of the band.

Check it out below!

Guitarist Gary Pounds had this to say, "Thematically, This is a very different recording than 'Thresholds'. Where 'Thresholds' was more ethereal, political and observational, 'Never Together' has a much more grounded subject basis. It's effectively a story of a man who has shut himself off from the world for so long, but is beginning to see the good in mankind. Removing himself from his cave to find the good in the world.

Anger, Fear, Disgust and coping with Death. But also intertwined with positivity, self-inspiration, and closure. These are the themes and the lyrical content comes from a very personal place and those experiences that inspired them. Musically, we wanted the sound to be reflective of these themes as well, While bringing back that early 2000's metal core style, mixed with more modern elements."

Fall Of Man Release Official Video for "Lullaby"

LA Based, Melodic Metal band Fall Of Man has released the Official Music video for "Lullaby." Filmed and directed by Evan Cantrell and Greg McKarus at New Kingdom Productions, "Lullaby" is off of their 2016 EP, Hallways and Doors.

"Lullaby is about my own experience with spiritual warfare - specifically in the form of evil, demonic dreams. I had those types of dreams ever since I was a small child and they intensified up 'til just a few years ago. Both the song and video represent the process I've gone though to gain the upper hand over those evil, demonic forces," says Erica Barile.

If you're in the mood for something loud, heavy, rich, and melodic, Fall of Man will satisfy your musical appetite; wrapping an appealing combination of sounds and genres into one brilliantly unique package. If you like powerful yet delicate vocals, thoughtful and bold lyrics, chunky and memorable riffs, heavy drums, along with a rich, complex, and original composition style, you'll dig Fall Of Man.

The band is currently booking shows in the Los Angeles area for summer '17 and will be recording new tracks this fall.

Famous Last Words Co-headline Spring Tour

This spring Famous Last Words will pair up with Manifest for a tour showcasing thier new 12 song album, Incubus. It seems likely to be the post hardcore we've all been waiting for, but are we still waiting on post-hardcore? For the handful of us that are, Famous Last Words have made this their darkest work, focusing again on their fictional character of Christine as she experiences sexual assault and a following courtroom trial during which she confronts her attacker.

Issues like these are what the band wanted to expose this time around. Singer Tollas explains that , "All of our full-length albums have told stories that tackle extremely difficult situations...The Incubus, tackles the issue of sexual and domestic abuse. I felt it was important to step forward and really bring this relentless issue to light."

Regardless of the gravity of their story, the songs are still wrought with the inarticulate warped tour screaming between the pseudo complex whining.

The tour starts on April 26th in Kent, Ohio, so get your tickets here.
