The Hook Launches: What Music Means To Me

Photographer: Rich Sanders

Photographer: Rich Sanders

We have spent a lot of time writing about music. Three years of our time, in fact, just writing about our friends, peers, colleagues, faceless emailers. We’ve loved every moment of it, but what does this all mean? We made it out of our terrible two’s, and we spent a lot of time refocusing our agenda on what’s important to us here at The Hook Journal.

Community is one of the biggest driving forces that we, as people who enjoy music, play music, make music, listen to music, archive music, would agree upon, right? What makes music this experience for all of us, no matter where we are in relation to it? Whether it’s behind a microphone, behind a camera, through headphones, in a packed basement in South Philly, a coffee bar in New Hampshire, an abandoned Warehouse in South Carolina, music gives us something to hold onto - so, we decided to ask about it.

What Music Means To Me is our forthcoming project that has been carefully asked of contributors all over the United States. The contributors are unique music creators, enjoyers, opinion havers, & art makers who identify all in different, creative & unique ways - ways that make them just them.

Music is one of the oldest art forms, and has been a constant source of power, of courage, of enlightment, of togetherness, of vulnerability - and we hope this project shows that. What Music Means To Me can be as abstract or as literal as human beings allow it, it can be in the form of words, of song, of art, of understanding and silence. We hope to create community by giving a platform to people, by giving the opportunity for others to feel understood, to give and receive empathy, to promote local music, and most of all to be meaningful humans.

Over the course of the next month and a half, beginning on April 10th, a new contributor’s story will post in the morning hours, and we hope that you read these stories, share these stories, take in these moments and apply them to What Music Means To You - and then let us know what you think, tell us your biggest fears, your highest moments, how to be better, who to listen to. What we want most of all from this project is a sense that people are heard, and this is a community that cares for every person, no matter how small or large their part - so, come be part of it with us!

Love,
The Hook Journal & Emily Famularo

Music Video Follows For Port Lucian Fans

unnamed.jpg

Back in November we covered Port Lucian’s first single, “Lucid Dreaming II,” a dreamy, love song for those romantic at heart. The recent Philadelphia transplant is making sure to pick up the pace as they debut the accompanying music video for “Lucid Dreaming II.”

The music video is just as soft as the track itself. A collection of retro images and graphics that stand idly by, being experienced. Enjoy it for yourself down below, debuting today!

The track: a layered collective of vocals & instrumentals lends itself perfectly to layered, tapered images of calm, and longing. Port Lucian has already proven the gravity of their emotions, as well as ours - and we’re ready for more. What’s to expect in the New Year for this newfound favorite!

The Hook: A Comeback Story (Or Something Like It)

Photographer: Richard Sanders

Photographer: Richard Sanders

This is the beginning.

In 2016, we started our site in a dimly lit bedroom on the corner of Locust & 15th in a basement apartment. Since then, we have grown exponentially and without limit. We could not be more appreciative of the music scene, not only here in Philadelphia, but the entire East Coast. We would not be who we are without the bands & artists that fuel us further, push us harder than what we believed.

In the two years since our beginning, we have hosted dozens of showcases, reviewed hundreds of albums, and put our stickers on lots of stop signs in different places around the country. We have been supported by volunteer writers, photographers and artists. We have paid every artist who has worked with us, and donated more than three-hundred dollars to different Philadelphia non-profit organizations. Without our scenes, near and far, we would not be where we are.

So, here we are. Two and a half years later, and we’re ready to get started. We will continue to host shows, to create charity EP’s to donate to important non-profit organizations, we will continue to review and talk about local music. We hope to begin to give voices to those who don’t always have them in our scene, we want to create critical op-ed pieces to, not only fuel and better our scene, but to also better ourselves as people in a world. It’s time to talk about it, so we will. We welcome guest writers, bloggers, and artists to host their work on our site. We welcome those who are in need of a safe space, of suggestions for shows, albums, groups that will allow every body in our scene the place it deserves.

If you're interested in learning more about us, we've got a handy video now, so check it out below!

To begin, we have our first returning showcase on July 13th at our place, so if you’ve never been to a Hook Show, this would be the one to get to. We will be hosting a show on July 17th at Century Bar, and future shows will soon be announced. We are in the works for a 5th Charity EP, featuring all unheard, local music for a good cause.

As always, you can check out our social media down below to keep up while you're on the move. More announcements to follow, so stay tuned!

"In The Dark" Is The Latest From The Caracals

IMG_5241.jpg

With a stellar mixture of garage rock roots and indie sound, The Caracals are bringing their own fresh twist to the scene. With a beginning in Orange County, California, the new project is inspired by gritty, noisy bands like The Black Keys or The Last Shadow Puppets. Their latest release, "In The Dark" is a conceptual single with hints of surf rock and contemporary twists.

We have it streaming down below for you, and we couldn't be more excited about it! Check it out down below.

The moody, brooding single is the set up for a hopeful 2018 EP from The Caracals and we'll agree that we're hopeful too. According to the band, their mission is "...to craft exciting down-to-earth tracks that are filled to the brims with chunky guitar riffs, energetic vocals and steady rhythm sections with a retro feel."

20180127_165824.jpg

The vulnerable, ever talented Lazarus Wilde has spent the new year preparing for their upcoming March release - an EP that explores the raw emotion of being, and one we're personally anticipating - but, in the meantime, Wilde has teased fans and listeners with a sneak peak of what's to come: a brand new single.

Exclusively on The Hook, we're premiering Lazarus Wilde's latest track "Angor Animi" for everyone to check out. We have a streaming video down below for you! The third release under Lazarus Wilde is anticipated release on March 1st, just a few weeks away. The Condition Of Human Dilemma will feature four tracks including "Angor Animi," and is sure to knock your socks clean off.

Check out the video below!

"I wanted to create a song that explored the feelings of someone going through an anxiety attack for the first time, i know when i myself had my first panic attack, i felt as though something was seriously wrong, in an extreme thought even possibly dying or having a heart attack. We as humans tend to internalize our emotions when things get hectic forgetting that sometimes we need to express our feelings in however way we see fit. This song was my approach in expressing a feeling that many of us experience often," says Wilde of the track.

So, you heard it hear first, "Angor Animi" is the first track off of Lazarus Wilde's March 1st EP - so stay tuned, because if you dig this then you're gonna dig the whole damn thing. As always, social media links down below to keep up with everything that is Lazarus Wilde!

With a blast from the past psychedelic feel & reminiscent of bands like Foals or Queens of the Stone Age, CHVNCE are bringing an enlightening sound for listeners - and we're not the only ones who are noticing. Beshiba Anticipates New Album With New Single

Photography: Jacob Williamson

Photography: Jacob Williamson

South Carolina's very own, Beshiba, is celebrating the upcoming release of their sophomore EP, Worthless, by sharing the second single off of the November 4th release! The song, "F.E.L" features a guest spot from Garett Hood, the vocalist/drummer of Guerrilla Warfare.

Check out the track below streaming for free on Bandcamp!

According to Beshiba, "The basis of the song came from the chant, which is rooted from the perspective of being an outcast from society and refusing to conform to the standards of every day life to which the mainstream imposes on you. It's about being a dreamer and looking beyond every day life and those precedents & values which are forced on you, and using your anger as a driving force to push through all that to achieve & get what you want out of life. On the other hand, the other parts of the song reference suburban kids who had everything handed to them on a golden plate who never really experienced hardship or poor upbringing, but try to pretend like they know what struggle is."

esides the anticipation of Worthless, Beshiba also recently announced a November tour, we've provided dates below! In the meantime, the single is available for free download on our Bandcamp as well as on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, & Google Play!

To keep up with any new announcements that Beshiba will be putting out, check out their social media to never miss a moment!

Queue Releases Brand New Single 'Frontier'

Dreamy Philadelphia locals Queue have shared their most recently single, "Frontier" with listeners recently! The brand new track is a smooth, indie rock vibe that marks the first release since their June 2016 2-track EP release!

"Frontier" moves Queue into an exciting direction, one that seems popular in indie music right now. I'd compare Queue to bands like Foals, or The xx. You should check it out below, streaming thanks to Soundcloud!

The track was produced, engineered & mixed by Ben Rice, recorded at Degraw Sound, Brooklyn, New York, and mastered by Justin Colletti, Joe Lambert Mastering.

We're really into this new track, and the band had this to say about the track, "The sound of this single is grounded by the bands that first got us started in music (ie. The Cure and The Smiths), and was our attempt at making the kind of song we wish we could still hear on the radio."

They're definitely on my list for things I want to hear on the radio, so I'll be sure to follow Queue nice and close! Check out their social media below to do the same!

Where Is My Spaceship Shares New Music

After a recent February release of his newest album, Mostly Crocodile, Where Is My Spaceship (mostly Josh Evensen) has spent his time release two new singles!

"I wanna be Tim Tebow" and "nothing/no one/no distinction" are the most recent endeavors for Where Is My Spaceship, and both follow suit in Mostly Crocodile's footsteps. The DIY punk mentality is strong with both of these tracks. While they aren't completely punk, the tracks both have an indie, garage rock type feel.

Both tracks are streaming above, and are anticipation tracks for Where Is My Spaceship's upcoming album, DIEFALLING. For more on Where Is My Spaceship and what they're up to, check out the links below so you don't miss anything they have to offer!

New Jersey Rockers Trü Release New Single "Trouble"

Trü

New Jersey based rockers,  Trü have released a single entitled “Trouble” in anticipation of their debut, self titled release. The four track EP drops June 9th via Destroy All Monsters Records.

"Trouble" is a high energy melodic cut with a sound that could be described as a cross between Weezer and Angels and Airwaves. Instrumentally, the single alternates steadily between high drive and soft/pretty.

Vocally, the tone and style are consistently soft spoken throughout. It features a constant higher octave double above the lead vocal line that adds an airy, pretty quality to the overall vibe of the song that also makes the lyrics pop a little more.

The band describes their sound as “Sad music for sad people,” but nonetheless I think it feels quite good to listen to. There is a swinging flow to the track that you can comfortably sway or bob your head to.

Listen to “Trouble” here, and stay tuned for the June 9th release of Trü.

CoolDad Music Celebrates 5 Years

Being a writer myself, it is always an accomplishment when a peer has something to celebrate - and this year, fellow music blog, CoolDad Music are celebrating their 5th year! And what a celebration to be had.

The award winning music site will be spending this special occasion (how else, honestly) by throwing a fantastic show - looking back and applauding 5 years of countless reviews, local show bookings and all around support of local music credited to Jim Appio!

Jim Appio had this to say on the exciting, upcoming event:

"I've never worked harder on anything than I have on CoolDad Music; and not one, single moment of it in five years has ever felt like work. I've become that cliché about following your passion. In that way, I feel like I can identify with many of the bands I cover.

"dolllys, Smalltalk, The Rock N Roll Hi-Fives, and Shellshag are all close friends of the site and continue to inspire me. dollys are students of classic pop music and, simply, one of my favorite bands. Smalltalk take me back to those days of tooling around the Jersey Shore and listening to WHTG. The Rock N Roll Hi-Fives are a shining example of how the family who rocks together, stays together. And Shellshag exemplifies staying true to your passion and doing things on your own terms.

"I'm honored that the Asbury Lanes Family have agreed to co-present the show. There would be no CoolDad Music without Asbury Lanes, and I hope we can achieve a little bit of the vibe of that place at the anniversary show."

The big party will be happening Saturday, March 25th at The Overlook at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ featuring performances by ShellshagdollysSmalltalk and The Rock N Roll Hi Fives!

You can check out the Facebook event right here, and be sure to get to the celebration! Check out CoolDad's links below for more info!
