The Hook: A Comeback Story (Or Something Like It)

Photographer: Richard Sanders

Photographer: Richard Sanders

This is the beginning.

In 2016, we started our site in a dimly lit bedroom on the corner of Locust & 15th in a basement apartment. Since then, we have grown exponentially and without limit. We could not be more appreciative of the music scene, not only here in Philadelphia, but the entire East Coast. We would not be who we are without the bands & artists that fuel us further, push us harder than what we believed.

In the two years since our beginning, we have hosted dozens of showcases, reviewed hundreds of albums, and put our stickers on lots of stop signs in different places around the country. We have been supported by volunteer writers, photographers and artists. We have paid every artist who has worked with us, and donated more than three-hundred dollars to different Philadelphia non-profit organizations. Without our scenes, near and far, we would not be where we are.

So, here we are. Two and a half years later, and we’re ready to get started. We will continue to host shows, to create charity EP’s to donate to important non-profit organizations, we will continue to review and talk about local music. We hope to begin to give voices to those who don’t always have them in our scene, we want to create critical op-ed pieces to, not only fuel and better our scene, but to also better ourselves as people in a world. It’s time to talk about it, so we will. We welcome guest writers, bloggers, and artists to host their work on our site. We welcome those who are in need of a safe space, of suggestions for shows, albums, groups that will allow every body in our scene the place it deserves.

If you're interested in learning more about us, we've got a handy video now, so check it out below!

To begin, we have our first returning showcase on July 13th at our place, so if you’ve never been to a Hook Show, this would be the one to get to. We will be hosting a show on July 17th at Century Bar, and future shows will soon be announced. We are in the works for a 5th Charity EP, featuring all unheard, local music for a good cause.

As always, you can check out our social media down below to keep up while you're on the move. More announcements to follow, so stay tuned!

"In The Dark" Is The Latest From The Caracals

IMG_5241.jpg

With a stellar mixture of garage rock roots and indie sound, The Caracals are bringing their own fresh twist to the scene. With a beginning in Orange County, California, the new project is inspired by gritty, noisy bands like The Black Keys or The Last Shadow Puppets. Their latest release, "In The Dark" is a conceptual single with hints of surf rock and contemporary twists.

We have it streaming down below for you, and we couldn't be more excited about it! Check it out down below.

The moody, brooding single is the set up for a hopeful 2018 EP from The Caracals and we'll agree that we're hopeful too. According to the band, their mission is "...to craft exciting down-to-earth tracks that are filled to the brims with chunky guitar riffs, energetic vocals and steady rhythm sections with a retro feel."

You heard it here, so to keep up with the up and comers, check out their social media down below!

Beshiba Anticipates New Album With New Single

Photography: Jacob Williamson

Photography: Jacob Williamson

South Carolina's very own, Beshiba, is celebrating the upcoming release of their sophomore EP, Worthless, by sharing the second single off of the November 4th release! The song, "F.E.L" features a guest spot from Garett Hood, the vocalist/drummer of Guerrilla Warfare.

Check out the track below streaming for free on Bandcamp!

According to Beshiba, "The basis of the song came from the chant, which is rooted from the perspective of being an outcast from society and refusing to conform to the standards of every day life to which the mainstream imposes on you. It's about being a dreamer and looking beyond every day life and those precedents & values which are forced on you, and using your anger as a driving force to push through all that to achieve & get what you want out of life. On the other hand, the other parts of the song reference suburban kids who had everything handed to them on a golden plate who never really experienced hardship or poor upbringing, but try to pretend like they know what struggle is."

esides the anticipation of Worthless, Beshiba also recently announced a November tour, we've provided dates below! In the meantime, the single is available for free download on our Bandcamp as well as on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, & Google Play!

To keep up with any new announcements that Beshiba will be putting out, check out their social media to never miss a moment!

GRIMM. Debuts New Music Video 'Summerset Station'

lights.jpg

A blend of hip-hop & alternative rock, GRIMM. brings out the best of both genres in their brand new single "Summerset Station," off of upcoming EP, spectrum. The new track also has an exclusive music video you can watch below!

The track is an upbeat, 21 Pilots-esque anthem that you definitely want to check out. If you're familiar with the genre blending techniques of Linkin Park, 21 Pilots, or even locally grown band Civil Youth, then you're definitely going to dig this. The video isn't what it seems, but maybe you should watch it for yourself to figure it out.

According to GRIMM., "After years of writing, managing and playing for bands, Adam found his own voice that would be the inspiration behind a new perspective in mainstream music. Being diagnosed with Autism at the age of 6, Adam had always been treated differently. Dealing with a mandatory separation from class into a resource room where Adam spent his time writing music and helping his classmates that functioned at a lower level. He used his musical ability to become more social and gain the confidence to become the performer he knows he will be. GRIMM. wants to be an inspiration to kids with Autism who feel their disability is stopping them from achieving their goals in life."

Good, new & exciting music for a good cause is definitely the type of stuff we like to get behind. GRIMM is going to push the limits on genre bending, and we look forward to what's to come in the near future!

Stay tuned later this month when GRIMM anticipates to release spectrum, and check out their social media to keep up with all updates!

the Big Drops Share Another Brand New Music Video

The Big Drops, a NY/NJ-based band with a psychedelic flair, has released a music video for their song “Baskets of Love,” which comes off their just released debut album, Time, Color. I’ve written an article for these guys before, and I was a big fan of their music, so I was excited to see the video for “Baskets of Love,” a song that’s reminiscent of 1960’s rock n’ roll.

The video features the band performing mostly in black and white, intermixed with close-up shots of the guys in vivid, vibrant color. The color contrasts make it really cool, and the way it’s filmed in grainy, vintage quality fits with the aesthetic of the song.

Check it out below!

The video originally premiered with Songwriting Magazine, where The Big Drops admitted that they had a lot of fun filming for “Baskets of Love.” Check it out, and I would definitely recommend listening to the full album of Time, Color. “Baskets of Love” isn’t the only great single on there, and I look forward to seeing some other possible music videos in the future (my personal favorite track is “By The Water,” and I’d love to see a visual companion for that).

In the meantime while you’re waiting for more releases, watch the video for “Baskets of Love,” download the album, and you can certainly expect to see The Big Drops appearing on the road this year! Some tour dates are down below, and be sure to follow The Big Drops on social media for any forthcoming announcements.

Where Is My Spaceship Shares New Music

After a recent February release of his newest album, Mostly Crocodile, Where Is My Spaceship (mostly Josh Evensen) has spent his time release two new singles!

"I wanna be Tim Tebow" and "nothing/no one/no distinction" are the most recent endeavors for Where Is My Spaceship, and both follow suit in Mostly Crocodile's footsteps. The DIY punk mentality is strong with both of these tracks. While they aren't completely punk, the tracks both have an indie, garage rock type feel.

The Funeral Portrait Announce Tour & Album

Atlanta’s Theatricore band, The Funeral Portrait, announced the arrival of their brand new album, A Moment of Silence, due out December 16th, 2016. The band consists of vocalist Lee Jennings, guitarist/vocalist Juergie Sandstorm, guitarist AJ Pekarek, bassist Chris King, and drummer Stephen Danzey. A Moment of Silence balances a combination of rock and roll, heavy metal, and theatricore, producing crafted tunes of love, loss, anger, and grief.

The band's lead vocalist describes the process behind the album: "We went into recording A Moment Of Silence trying to display a more dangerous and honest side of The Funeral Portrait. Everything on this record is real and played from the heart." Lead guitarist Juergie echoes: "A Moment of Silence is a story that explores one man's journey through the afterlife. In this universe there is eternity after death, but there is no god and there is no heaven. This man has been told his entire life that when he died, God would greet him at the gates of heaven. Now he must drift and observe, waiting for the truth to reveal itself."

Check out the video below!

The Funeral Portrait’s co-headliner tour kicks off this November with Farewell, My Love. Their new music video for “The Water Obeyed the Gravity” premiered exclusively with Alternative Press. For more on The Funeral Portrait, check out their social media below, and tour dates are below as well!

Hiding Out Announces EP

We're excited to share that New Jersey's Hiding Out has announced the details of their upcoming EP!

The news comes after their most recent release in January, "Light Me Up." A tangy, catchy song that makes the jersey come out in anyone, especially me. The song is reminiscent of warm summer nights in the salty air, and impressively totes lyrics, vocals, and instrumental coordination that listeners can easily get lost into. If you aren't listening to it, you should be listening to it - bottom line.

After its release, the single became available on Spotify to stream, as well as for purchase on iTunes. "Light Me Up" received a great deal of success from listeners, and if it proves anything about Hiding Out it proves that their upcoming EP, Vena Cava, is going to be a collection of tracks you need to be on the look out for.

Track listing:
1. Dry Heat
2. Light Me Up
3. Vena Cava
4. Ghosts In The Backseat

Vena Cava is expected to drop on April 1st, and will contain 4 tracks, one of which being "Light Me Up." You can check out the tracklist above for the inside scoop on the tracks! Expect waves to be made with this release, and we're already itching with anticipation.

Hiding Out is comprised of Joe Dicamillo (guitar), Bryan Little (bass), John McManus (vocals), and Kevin Sardy (drums). The group has been quickly gaining momentum thanks to "Light Me Up," and will also be playing a ton of gigs and amping up fans in preparation for their debut EP - and I have "Light Me Up," on repeat until then!

For more info on Hiding Out, or what they're up to, check out their social media plugs below! Meanwhile, keep checking back on Halfbeat for complete coverage of these talented guys.
