Melt Mountain Share Debut Album

A four-piece guitar-pop ensemble from Greece (one of my favorite countries in the world, which makes these guys automatically worth listening to, IMHO) called Melt Mountain has just released their first official full-length album, titled Superfetish. This release follows the band’s previous self-titled EP containing four songs. Superfetish was released via Inner Ear Records, and is available for streaming on YouTube, Spotify and BandCamp

Melt Mountain describes themselves as “one’s inner most angst” which sounds kind of perfect for us millennials, am I right? We’re full of angst. It’s leftover from the days we all listened to MCR and Green Day. Except Melt Mountain is more on the side of dreamy indie-pop than hard alternative. Superfetish dives into the depths of Melt Mountain as musicians, exploring the limits they were willing to go to past their self-titled EP. The album is influenced by urban culture and conduct, and the complexities of urban life. It explores aspects of the misunderstood personality and captures the band’s abstract thought process and their musical power.

Melt Mountain is made up of Dimitris Apostolakidis on guitar, keys, and vocals; Eddie Theofanisis on bass; Nikos Bakopoulus on saxophone; Xenofon Karakonstantis on guitar, keys, and vocals; and Nikos Kotsaris on drums. It’s always cool to hear some international music, so let’s spread the word about these guys around Philly!
Listen to Superfetish through the link, and keep up with Melt Mountain for more news!

Spaceface (feat. Jake of The Flaming Lips) Release Video

A hallucinatory, head-first dive into the pysch-rock band, Spaceface, is out now via Paste Magazine. Spaceface’s music video for their single “Spread Your Head” offers a visually fantastical, mind-bending glimpse of the band’s live performance.

Led by frontman Jake Ingalls (guitarist/keyboardist of The Flaming Lips), Spaceface's “Spread Your Head” comes off the band’s recent album Sun Kids and is the perfect catalyst for their upcoming tour. Check out the video below!

The video was produced and filmed by DIY art collective, The Moon, with cinematography and editing by Joe Ashi. Based in Grand Rapids, the company is led by Natalie Wetzel, who has collaborated with Oliver Hibert and done installs in Wayne Coyne’s art gallery. Spaceface hits the road this summer, with a Digital Tour Bus sponsored tour in support of the video and their latest album, Sun Kids, released this April.

“We booked the tour ourselves a while ago,” Ingalls shared. “I’m hyped because we’ve upped the ante with a bunch of new sound reactive LED’s, and new tunes like the one featured in the video! We’re touring in support of our new record, Sun Kids, which came out just last month. We also get to play with a lot of really great bands such as Broncho, Sugar Candy Mountain, Flaural, and tons of others.”

New Single “Mysteries of Nature” From Mouth Breather

Montreal alt-funk solo artist Owen Hooper, more commonly known as Mouth Breather, has released his new single and music video, “Mysteries of Nature.”

Check out the video below!

The video gives off a ‘70’s vibe, and features Mouth Breather singing directly into the camera in a yellow-hued blast of color and energy. The song captures Mouth Breather’s upbeat personality and represents the singer passionately, romantically, politically and socially. “Mysteries of Nature” was born from a jam session with Mouth Breather and his friends last summer, and with a funky bass-line and catchy beat, the track is bound to get stuck in your head. The music video is certainly eye-catching enough to hold the viewer’s attention. Directed by William Wilkinson, the video was shot on an old TV zoom lens to give it more of that vivacious 70’s feel.

“Mysteries of Nature” is funky, fun, colorful, and it continues Mouth Breather’s tradition of bringing his philosophy to his music. From the official video release via Atwood Magazine, Mouth Breather’s purpose with his music “is to ask abstract questions with little hope of an answer. The youth of today are told they can be whatever they want, but Mouth Breather is here to remind them that they can’t.” “Mysteries of Nature” does just that.

Give it a listen and watch the video below, and hear more of Mouth Breather’s music on his social media.

Benchmarks Asks Us All To Be Kinder With New Single

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, new indie punk band Benchmarks is getting ready to release their first full-length album. Our Undivided Attention will be available on March 24th, but for now, Benchmark’s latest single “Let You Down” is available for streaming.

Check it out below!

The song gives a reminder to its audience that it is necessary to remember to be kind to one another, as that is something that is so often forgotten in today’s society. With Nashville serving as the backdrop, the lyrics of “Let You Down” paint a picture of forgiveness, of kindness, and of loving one another.

Benchmarks vocalist Todd Farrell Jr. (who is also the lead guitarist for Columbus-based punk band Two Cow Garage) says this of the song, “The idea for this song came after a friend called me out on something I said that I, perhaps, didn’t think through. We all build our own ‘houses’ around ourselves based on the way we see the world, but it doesn’t mean that the rest of the world outside doesn’t exist. I used the backdrop of a rapidly developing city (like Nashville, where we live) to tell the story of tearing our neighbors down to build ourselves up, and how maybe that’s not the best way to treat people.”

The album Our Undivided Attention is the follow-up to Benchmark’s EP, The American Night, which was released in June 2015. The album’s first single “Frames” is available for streaming on Spotify, and you can listen to “Let You Down” on SoundCloud. Physical copies of Our Undivided Attention are available for pre-order through SofaBurn Records, and you can connect with Benchmarks on their social media sites!

Lunch Ladies Stream New Single "Pick Yourself Up"

lunch ladies.jpg

Lunch Ladies embody an uncommon sound. Think Vampire Weekend meets some random carnival music. It may sound strange, but the NJ natives manage to invoke some memories reminiscent of your careless childhood jaunts down a New Jersey boardwalk plus whatever creepiness you forgot exists at a New Jersey boardwalk. It can perhaps be the theme to an old time hipster, but still terrifying fun house. Like one in American Horror Story.

Stream it below!

"Pick Yourself Up," is the first single off Lunch Ladies’ debut album, Down on Sunset Strip, slated for release on March 10th, 2017.

Singer Cynthia Rittenbach’s vocal tone provides a sense of playful vertigo one may find themselves in during a post-apocalyptic trip to Coney Island, where you’re completely alone and the rides are mysteriously operating by themselves. However, the creepiness gives way to a feeling of harmony as each instrument fits snug in between the quick taps of a hi-hat cymbal. By the end of the song you may feel a bit dizzy and hypnotized, but isn’t that what songs are supposed to do?

Upcoming Tour dates:

2/15 - Shea Stadium - Brooklyn, NY
3/10 - The J House - New Brunswick, NJ (release show)
4/14 - Brighton Bar - Long Branch, NJ

SØF Release New Track "Ghosts"

East Brunswick's very own, SØF has taken some time to do some re-branding, allowing herself to take on a new persona! Shedding away her initial pop tracks, SØF delves into a feisty and organic sound. She plans to release multiple singles throughout the first half of 2017, hoping to maintain a wave of momentum through her natural ability to write descriptive, personified indie tracks, all tinged with a hint of relatable pop.

To do so, SØF has released her single, "Ghosts" which you can check out below!

About the tracks, SØF states: “Writing “Ghosts” was admittedly a massive therapy session for me. For years, I dealt with a unforgiving urge to cling to the past and hold onto the memories of people who hurt me. I wanted so badly to be the girl who is unaffected by all of that, and “Ghosts” was my way of faking it until I could make it.”

Alex Di Leo Releases EP

A few months back, singer-songwriter Alex Di Leo teased the release of his debut EPSo We Go, with his single "Make it Easier". Fast-forward to early November, the Florida-based musician streamed the eagerly-awaited EP exclusively on Substream Magazine before its official release on November 4th.

Hyping up this first endeavor as a solo artist, Alex put out a video for "Waking Up", the final track off the work, which you can stream below:

Alex takes listeners through an indie, pop, and sometimes folk journey throughout the 6-song release. His sound brings to mind bands like Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, etc. He offers that crisp, light pop sound - the kind of artist you'd expect to hear at an outdoor music festival or in your top-down convertible driving along the ocean on a cloudless day.

So We Go tracklist:
1) So We Go
2) Make It Easier
3) I've Been Waiting

4) When We First Met
5) Reason
6) Waking Up

Unfortunately, you can't get the work for free, but So We Go is available for streaming on Spotify, iTunes, etc. Alex Di Leo is definitely an artist worth checking out for fans of easy listening indie pop. I'm intrigued to see where he goes from here in that this is but his first release as a solo artist - it will be cool to see how he approaches a full length release.

Otherwise, if you haven't already, check out my interview with the lad and keep up with Alex on his social media!

Wild Americans Debut New EP

Montclair NJ based indie-pop trio Wild Americans have just released their brand new 4 track EP, entitled Lighten Up.

Lighten Up is Wild Americans’ first ever release. It delivers in its promises of a laid back indie vibe. The perfect kind of music for when you want to unwind a little bit. Originally the band had no intention of sharing the music with the world, guitarist/vocalist Andrew Milea elaborates…

“When Mike  and I were still in college, we collaborated on his senior thesis project. The idea was to create original musical content, record it ourselves, and come up with a hypothetical marketing plan for it. We went with a few tunes that he had written, and a couple of mine too. We spent every day of, what felt like a very long and extremely cold winter in our studio space, where we demoed and arranged the material. We showed the project to friends and they were all really encouraging. We picked out our four favorite songs, put a band together, and recorded them live at Portrait Recording Studios, with a few overdubs here and there.”

The record was mastered by Scott Hull, who has worked with Sting, John Mayer, Bob Dylan, and a number of others.

1. Afternoon
2. Ocean
3. I Wanna Take You Home
4. Loser Freaks

I for one am very glad that Wild Americans chose to put the record out. You can check out the music video to Lighten Up’s lead single “I Wanna Take You Home” right here!

Secret Arcade Shares New Music Video

Portland's Secret Arcade have released a music video for their catchy single, “Suspect.”

Secret Arcade is the alias of Babak Govan, a fictional author. You know his work is unique given that description. The track is off his newest album, Quarter Century, which was released on April 26th. “Suspect” is a perfect encapsulation of the sound of the album, dark 80's-inspired Depeche Mode/Morrisey/The Cure pop about moody reflection, uneasiness, and of course, suspicion.

The album was originally supposed to tackle the subjects of Govan's first 25 years but since he was working on it by himself, it took thirteen years longer than he intended. The album has been updated to discuss love and loss and all of the emotions necessary to give proper reflection on his life.

The new music video for “Suspect” is surrounded with mystery and features a man standing in a darkened alleyway playing his keyboard. It eventually cuts to an ongoing story, depicting the man  running away from something, constantly trying to avoid a tail while looking over his shoulder. The sequence certainly goes somewhere, so you should give the video a watch to find out where!

Below is the music video for “Suspect.”

There's also a music video for “Fall for Me,” which was released late last month. You can check that out here!

You should also check out the full album release if you enjoyed the song. You can get the album, Quarter Century, on Bandcamp, iTunes, and Amazon. It's also available for streaming on Spotify!

Night Argent Deconstructs Track

On March 24th, Night Argent debuted a deconstructed version of their track, "Nothing More Beautiful."

The track is from their upcoming self-titled EP, and has been a hit with listeners - amping people up for Night Argent's April 22 release. Night Argent stripped down the song, adding a cello and vocal beatbox accents, giving the original arena rock song a saucy, seductive feel.

"A couple months ago our manager asked us if we'd be willing to put together an acoustic version of our first single 'Nothing More Beautiful' as a bonus track for our EP. We loved the idea, but didn't want to play the exact same arrangement as the original just on acoustic instruments. We wanted to take the sound we created and deconstruct it, rebuild it with a new arrangement, and a completely new vibe. 'Nothing More Beautiful' has always had a big sound, so we decided to challenge ourselves and bring out a more chill and raw ambience to the track, while maintaining the emotional impact of the original." - Chase Manhattan

You can check out the track above on youtube!
