New Music Video and Single from Nora Rothman

hi.jpg

There’s a new folk singer/songwriter on the scene, and her name is Nora Rothman. Her debut self-titled EP will be released on July 21st, 2017, but first, she’s released the music video for her single, “Truth or Dare.” The song is an original ukulele track (my favorite – to be honest, I think the ukulele is severely under-utilized in music and I want more of it) with an interesting story behind it.

Check it out below!

Nora said, “’Truth or Dare’ was the first song I ever wrote on a ukulele. I don’t think I even knew any chords. I sat down in my childhood bedroom and three hours later it was done. I never touched it again.”

The video for “Truth or Dare” was filmed against the backdrop of a leather bear convention and rock show on Nora’s block. In the midst of trying to film the video, Nora and her videographer were interrupted by the noise from the raucous festival, so they decided to improvise and join in on the fun.

Nora Rothman has a folk soul sound described as a tantalizing mix of Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell, and Frank Ocean. Her upcoming EP features three songs that showcase her original musicality, and I for one can’t wait to hear it.

Keep an eye out for the official release, and keep up with Nora on social media for more updates.

Islander Releases Music Video For "Casket"

Islander

On May fourth, Islander released the fifth and final video from their most recent release, Power Under Control. The single, entitled “Casket,” is a hard-hitting but melodically brilliant tune. Frontman Mikey Carvajal says of the singe, “Lyrically, when I was writing “Casket,” I felt like I took a page out of the Johnny Cash playbook. I think the song speaks for itself, it's a jammer."

Recalling the evidently eventful video shoot, Carvajal recalls, “We actually shot this video on NASA's property in Florida. We were riding to a show with the director, Nathan Mowery, and saw a spot that looked good to dig some graves down a gravel road. Once a NASA helicopter started hovering right above us, it was pretty apparent that we probably should have picked another spot. Thankfully, we were already done shooting. Also, we didn't find any aliens, sadly."

Check out Islanders brand new video for “Casket” and catch them on tour with Bad Seed Rising and The Funeral Portrait June 7th through 13th, or with Korn, Stone Sour and Baby Metal June 15th through the 28th.

New Single “Mysteries of Nature” From Mouth Breather

Montreal alt-funk solo artist Owen Hooper, more commonly known as Mouth Breather, has released his new single and music video, “Mysteries of Nature.”

Check out the video below!

The video gives off a ‘70’s vibe, and features Mouth Breather singing directly into the camera in a yellow-hued blast of color and energy. The song captures Mouth Breather’s upbeat personality and represents the singer passionately, romantically, politically and socially. “Mysteries of Nature” was born from a jam session with Mouth Breather and his friends last summer, and with a funky bass-line and catchy beat, the track is bound to get stuck in your head. The music video is certainly eye-catching enough to hold the viewer’s attention. Directed by William Wilkinson, the video was shot on an old TV zoom lens to give it more of that vivacious 70’s feel.

“Mysteries of Nature” is funky, fun, colorful, and it continues Mouth Breather’s tradition of bringing his philosophy to his music. From the official video release via Atwood Magazine, Mouth Breather’s purpose with his music “is to ask abstract questions with little hope of an answer. The youth of today are told they can be whatever they want, but Mouth Breather is here to remind them that they can’t.” “Mysteries of Nature” does just that.

Give it a listen and watch the video below, and hear more of Mouth Breather’s music on his social media.

DYLYN Releases New Single “Mimosa”

Up-and-coming pop singer DYLYN’s new single encompasses the feeling of what it’s like to be stuck inside your own head. With an original sound combined with lyrics that poignantly describe the struggle of feeling like the world is coming down around you, “Mimosa” sends the message that sometimes it’s necessary to take a breath and just let go.

For people who struggle with anxiety, and anyone else who knows what it’s like to face seemingly impossible hurdles in life, this song comes across as truthful and real. It’s a song that lets you know you’re not alone; other people all around you may be facing the exact same problems, and knowing that you don’t have to face these issues by yourself can bring comfort. That’s what this song tries to get across, and it succeeds.

Check out a stream of the track below on Soundcloud!

“Many of us experience some sort of anxiety throughout our lives,” says DYLYN. “The song captivates the inner struggle we go through in our heads, that battle to either drown in it or fight it.” But with “Mimosa”, DYLYN tells her audience that taking a deep breath and letting things happen is sometimes the best way to find solace in your anxiety.

Produced by Colin Munroe, who has worked with artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Drake, “Mimosa” is now available for streaming on SoundCloud and Spotify!

Jesse Sheppard Makes Announcement

2016 hasn't been a total wash. Proving my point, December has been a big month for pop country singer-songwriter, Jesse Sheppard (at least someone's doing well!). Earlier this month, Jesse put out a fun lyric video for his single "Run Away" - a light, fun and poppy country track capturing the feeling of young love; the arrogance, the freedom, sneaking out after dark, etc. These feelings are cemented with Shepard's addition of strings and slide guitar riddled throughout the track that really drive home "Hey. This is a country song." But what's even more fun for Shepard is that he put out an actual music video for "Run Away" just a few weeks later.

You can check out the heart throb's video below (hold on to your hats, ladies!):

Upon watching and listening to "Run Away", if you haven't already been impressed by Jesse Sheppard's songwriting, singing and striking appearance (I mean, you're probably lying), then this next little tidbit may just impress you. Sheppard added to December's excitement by announcing his little weekender with your fav alt-rockers, Paradise Fears. Early 2017, you can check out the young songwriter followed by Paradise in both MA and NY...the specifics are below:

Otherwise, if unable to attend these dates (how dare you!), you can keep up with Jesse Sheppard on:

Late Night Fights Release Music Video for "Nothing To Lose"

Late Night Fights, from Minneapolis, have released a new music video for a single off of their recent Jousthouse LP. The song is called “Nothing To Lose” and the video originally premiered on PureGrainAudio.

Late Night Fights had this to say about “Nothing To Lose,”: “This song is about how much uncertainty is involved when you meet someone, and how the exhilaration can so quickly change to shock. People are often not what they seem and sometimes their deep dark secrets get exposed, and sometimes it's a pegging fetish.”

You can check out the music video right here!

The band has another video on the way; they've shot the footage for their song “Saving Face” and they also have begun to work on their next EP. They plan to record it with Dan Korneff and James Harley at Sonic Debris Studios in New York this month.

The trio of Late Night Fights consists of vocalist/guitarist Ryan Guanz Guanzon, Shane Train Peckham on bass, and Daniel Sledgehammer Johnson on drums.

You can check out Late Night Fights on their social media pages to keep up with further announcements on their next video and new EP!

Matt Blais Conquers the Desert in New Music Video for “Set me Free”

unnamed (5).jpg

Matt Blais, the southern rocker from the great white north, has released a new music video for his hit song “Set me Free” and it is ripe with slide guitars, raspy, bluesy vocals, mandolins and of course his signature harmonica.

Despite the fact that nearly every aspect about Blais’s artistry is inspired by southern-folk rock, he is in fact originally from Canada; a fact that speaks volumes about who he is as a person and artist to me. Sounding like Ryan Adams, The Arkells, and even a little Tragically Hip, “Set me Free” is an excellent song and an even better produced music video.

To further cement his blues sound and image, the “Set me Free” music video finds Blais alone in the desert with nothing but his guitar, his harmonica, and of course a beat up classic car. The simple-hearted nature of the video coupled with some excellent videography works extremely well in tandem with the song and makes it a joy to watch. The grainy filter placed over top feels natural in most places, however the more you notice it, the more it overstays its welcome which is easily the biggest drawback about the video.

Check it out for yourself below!

While a relatively tamer song than what his fans may be used to, “Set me Free” finds Blais at the top of his game. A song that does not try to do more than what it should and a video that embodies everything about the music make “Set me Free” from Matt Blais a true delight, and us here at The Hook are extremely excited for more things to come.

Keep your eyes and ears on Matt Blais via his social media or website at the links below!

Geordie Kieffer Releases Official Music Video for “Red Line”

The infamously sexy and comedic imagination of LA’s agro-pop wiz-kid, Geordie Kieffer, premiers a delightfully twisted new video for his newest single, “Red Line” via Myspace

The singer-songwriter/producer, has been working day and night to recreate his own video — he explains, “One of my friends who happened to be in [the first version] got a big time movie deal and her agents wouldn’t let us put out ‘Red Line.’ Too graphic, not the right image. Therefore, we needed to start fresh with a new director, producer, et cetera.”

The video for “Red Line,” unlike its beloved precursor, “Tastes Like Chocolate,” is shot in a stark black-and-white, drawing a sharp contrast between the good and the evil within its three-minute running time. “This video was a fucking ball. I mean, who doesn’t like drugs, violence, and cake?!” Geordie posits. “Unlike ‘Tastes Like Chocolate,’ this video was shot very quickly. We had a concept that we liked and we wanted to get it done. My mom hates it, but she still loves me.”

Under Paris Share Music Video For New Single

Metalcore quartet Under Paris release a video for their new single “Revive.” With this new single, they also toured with Ashes of My Regret and Set For Tomorrow. The tour began in Beckley, WV and finished Saginaw, MI!

According to Vocalist Michael Alexander, “Revive’ is more than just a song to us. It’s a new beginning. It’s a fresh start. For me personally it’s about getting a lot of things of my chest and saying what I’ve been thinking and feeling for the past two years. You hear the phrase ‘turning the page’ a lot but this is so much more. This is us closing the book on what we use to be and starting something new. This is us, being honest and being real. This is us moving on, this is us growing. This is our Revive.”

The band has been going strong since September 2012 beginning with a release of their first single, “If the Drugs Don’t Work, Can You Drive Me Home?” which featured Rene Lopez of Scarlett O’Hara. Their prolific work consists of two singles off of their first EP Our Stories and others off of their full length entitled “Transitions.” The band is very pleased to be signed to Imminence Records and hope to reach a larger audience with this single.
