The Hook Launches: What Music Means To Me

Photographer: Rich Sanders

Photographer: Rich Sanders

We have spent a lot of time writing about music. Three years of our time, in fact, just writing about our friends, peers, colleagues, faceless emailers. We’ve loved every moment of it, but what does this all mean? We made it out of our terrible two’s, and we spent a lot of time refocusing our agenda on what’s important to us here at The Hook Journal.

Community is one of the biggest driving forces that we, as people who enjoy music, play music, make music, listen to music, archive music, would agree upon, right? What makes music this experience for all of us, no matter where we are in relation to it? Whether it’s behind a microphone, behind a camera, through headphones, in a packed basement in South Philly, a coffee bar in New Hampshire, an abandoned Warehouse in South Carolina, music gives us something to hold onto - so, we decided to ask about it.

What Music Means To Me is our forthcoming project that has been carefully asked of contributors all over the United States. The contributors are unique music creators, enjoyers, opinion havers, & art makers who identify all in different, creative & unique ways - ways that make them just them.

Music is one of the oldest art forms, and has been a constant source of power, of courage, of enlightment, of togetherness, of vulnerability - and we hope this project shows that. What Music Means To Me can be as abstract or as literal as human beings allow it, it can be in the form of words, of song, of art, of understanding and silence. We hope to create community by giving a platform to people, by giving the opportunity for others to feel understood, to give and receive empathy, to promote local music, and most of all to be meaningful humans.

Over the course of the next month and a half, beginning on April 10th, a new contributor’s story will post in the morning hours, and we hope that you read these stories, share these stories, take in these moments and apply them to What Music Means To You - and then let us know what you think, tell us your biggest fears, your highest moments, how to be better, who to listen to. What we want most of all from this project is a sense that people are heard, and this is a community that cares for every person, no matter how small or large their part - so, come be part of it with us!

Love,
The Hook Journal & Emily Famularo

Catch Up With Us: Puppy Angst Shares New Music in November

Philadelphia’s own Puppy Angst is swiftly moving onto the scene with their fuzzy, noisy sound sure to make you feel welcomed & in your feels.

The celebrated the end of 2018 by releasing their first full band track, “meet at the show.” Represented by Good How Are You Records, Puppy Angst had help from Dylan Kittrell at The Blank Space recording & mixing “meet at the show,” while the track was mastered by bassist Kyle O'Connor.

Check it out streaming below!

Having been released on November 16th, the track holds it’s own as an impressive & well constructed track that pulls at the heartstrings while also remaining easy to listen to. I’d be interested to see where Puppy Angst moves forward in the new year, and I wonder how they vibe on stage, as well as how they continue to grow and become an valuable piece of Philadelphian DIY culture.

In Place Share Their Latest Single "Spiral Daze" With Listeners

Philadelphia's very own instrumental duo, In Place, have recently released their newest single "Spiral Daze" for fans and listeners!

Recorded out of the band’s home studio, the song is the byproduct of a brief moment of life’s pressure pushing down all at once. "The beginning riff symbolizes the intensity while the acoustic at the end is the release of that," says In Place.

Check out the single, "Spiral Daze" below!

In Place is made up of childhood friends Brandon Cassel and Justin Leggio. Focused on electric guitar and drums, they incorporate brass, percussion, and bass elements performed by friends of the two. The sound has been described as moody, filled with peaks and valleys of tension and release, and that instills a sense of nostalgia and reflection in the listener.

If you're digging this and wondering when you can catch In Place live, you can catch them on July 20th at Front Street Cafe performing with QQQ and Shy. There will be artwork by Cody Bluett as well, so you're in for a treat!

Cool Philly Bands Record Cool Songs

It's always fun seeing your favorite local music, and it's even more fun when your favorite local artists come together to create a kick ass compilation album featuring some of their favorite covers!

George Valdivia is to thank for the culmination of the cover compilation, as he brought together (whether by chance or fate) some of Philadelphia's top notch local DIY artists! Musicians like Curtis Cooper, Stavi, Witch H(c)unt, and Kevin Brusha of Cerulean Blue all came together to share their favorite tracks, and take it from us, it's really stinkin' good.

Check out a quick recap of the tracklist below!

Check out George's experience with creating this project, "My "Fostex 160 multitracker" is what I used for the whole thing. I've recorded 2 solo albums under the name "Georgey V" and by the end of the 2nd album, I started to realize that I wasn't to bad at doing this whole recording thing. I started thinking "Hey why don't I record my friends on this and see what they would sound like" it later became the idea of having them pick out a cover they enjoyed to play/listen to/favorite song. I started with recording Kevin Brusha of "Cerulean Blue" at the now "Overlook Hotel" it was fun! Recording someone else who wasn't me. Later through the night I said hell let's record a couple more people at this house because they're very talented in there own unique way. So I ended up recording Forest Ranger, I recorded his song in one take. I micd his acoustic guitar that's 4 string [I believe] and he just played. Lina Xinos now going by the name (Stavi) just so happened to be there so I recorded them as well. A week or so past and I decided to record Branden Bauer, this session was kinda more relaxed and a very fun time. Time went by and Curtis Cooper messaged me asking to record something on my 4 track. I told Curtis what I was doing, and they said they wanted to be apart of it."

"This was exciting because I really enjoy Curtis's music and when I started going to basement shows Curtis was one of the first people who I saw perform. My girlfriend and I came to his house at the "all night diner" for me to record him. We spent from 12 in the afternoon till 4 recording, this was a very interesting time because I felt like this was the first time I really got to know Curtis as a person. Super nice sweet person and obviously very talented! For example as we were talking about how we would record, Curtis would be noodling on the guitar completely paying attention to what I was saying and having responses. (I definitely can't do that lol) anyway the whole thing was very interesting watching Curtis play each instrument and when it finally came time to record vocals it was incredible hearing Curtis change with his powerful dynamics. Next I started to record my song because hey I wanted to be apart of this thing too hahah I chose the song Adeline by Dr. Dog because I love Dr. Dog and if you ever listen to the album "toothbrush" the whole thing was recorded on a 4 track so I kinda thought to myself I have to do it heh heh. Last I recorded Dori of "Witch H(c)unt" at the "all night diner" as well. This was nice to record because this was the first time I've recorded someone with a banjo. We spent an hour or two to record. This is pretty much it for the recording aspect the only thing I wish I've done was record the band "Fred Beans" but it just didn't happen and by the end of everything my 4 track kinda kicked the bucket. Next I took it to be mixed and mastered by Tim Jordan of "Sun Organ" veeerrrry cool guy. When we finished we drank two 6 packs and just shared music with each other and hung out."

Definitely stream the album above on bandcamp, and check out all of these really cool, local artists who are all giving their own unique flare to each track on this quirky EP. That's a Hook recommendation!

Check out the Soundcloud stream for "Control," below!

For the past decade and a half, the group has been known for their old-school-street poetry influenced language and delivery underscored by enticingly alarming, sinister sounds.

They’re eccentricity manifests most in their full-length albums: Gutter Tactics (2009), Abandoned Language (2007), Absence (2005), From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002), and Negro Necro Nekros (1998) - all of which were released through Ipecac Recordings. This consisted of DJ rEk, who works the turn-tables, as well as co-producer Mike Manteca who manages samplers and effects. The trio united to share their original, experimental sub-hip-hop genre through their long anticipated album, Asphalt for Eden
