Jesea Lee Releases Dreamy New Acoustic Single "Great Lakes"

Photographer: Andrew Wells

Cleveland-based indie pop songwriter Jesea Lee has released the third single from is upcoming debut EP, Sleepspent. "Great Lakes" is an acoustic track about Lee's fiancé and tells a dreamy story of one's willingness to endure anything to keep the person they love safe.

Check out the stream below!

"While recording my new EP I had three tracks done and it felt incomplete, like I needed to have a fourth song and I knew I wanted it to be an intimate acoustic track," says Lee. "When I sat down to write this song I had just gotten engaged, so the words poured out of me pretty quickly. After I recorded the guitar and vocals, it felt a little too simple, so my buddy Lance and I spent hours creating all these weird ambient sounds with feedback and different amps. I think it really adds to the mood and atmosphere of the song."

Pre-order Sleepspent now on iTunes or Bandcamp and get an instant download of the EP's first single "TV Glow." Definitely check out the new track, and then check out Lee's social media to keep up with his upcoming release!

Julian Fulton's New Single "Rosie's Disposition" Out Now

Songwriter Julian Fulton recently shared his new single, “Rosie’s Disposition,” off his upcoming EP, Battered Receptions. Fulton says the song is about “feeling caged, trying to convince yourself you’re happy, until finally running off in pursuit of something substantially more fulfilling.” The description certainly fits with the song, which includes some train sounds and is reminiscent of running away to find better days.

“Rosie’s Disposition” has some beautiful harmonies in the back half and a melodious guitar riff that I’m obsessed with, and it definitely makes me excited for the full release of Battered Receptions.

Battered Receptions will be Fulton’s third self-released EP, slated for release on May 12th, and the proceeds from the pre-order of the album will go towards the ACLU! Julian Fulton performs solo or with his band, The Zombie Gospel, and Battered Receptions is another of his solo explorations as his fellow band members go off to pursue school or job opportunities.

If the rest of the songs on the EP are anything like “Rosie’s Disposition,” it promises to be a successful release.

Fulton first performed at age 17, and since then, he has been making strides in the music world. Whether he’s solo or working with The Zombie Gospel, he delivers genre-bending music that pulls you in and makes you want more. I’ll be marking my calendar for the release of Battered Receptions, and I’m probably going to listen to “Rosie’s Disposition” ten more times before the EP comes out.

Catch Julian Fulton live at a couple of his upcoming shows below! (Also don’t forget to pre-order the EP so you can support the ACLU!) Do yourself a favor and listen to “Rosie’s Disposition,” and then get inspired by it and hop on a train to a random place. And then listen to the song again while you’re on the train. It’s that kind of track.

Tour dates:
5/20 – John & Peter’s – New Hope, PA

Dryjacket Shares New Music Video

Dryjacket has released a new music video for their song “Patron Without Funds,” exclusively with Paste Magazine. The song comes off the band’s debut album For Posterity, which was released in January and is available for streaming and purchase now. The video for “Patron Without Funds” was shot in New York City and directed by Josh Coll.

If you’ve never heard of Dryjacket before, they’re a New Jersey indie band who joined Yellowcard on their farewell tour last October (RIP Yellowcard! “Ocean Avenue” will always and forever be a jam). For Posterity, their first album and a promising debut, “documents a series of unfavorable events that led to a pretty tough year,” says vocalist and guitarist Joe Junod. Despite the unfortunate circumstances the album describes, the band is extremely happy with the final product, and they look forward to be able to continue making honest music for their fans.

The “Patron Without Funds” video portrays a Wall Street man who dreams big, and it sends a message to those of us who are wondering if we can really do the things we’ve always imagined. It’s inspiring and motivating, and it makes you want to go out and run after your dreams with determination.

Dryjacket includes Joe Junod, guitarist and vocalist Brad Wyllner, bassist and vocalist Ian Foley and drummer Adam Cerdan. If “Patron Without Funds” gets you hooked on the band, they’ve got an upcoming show in Philly! See them live at Johnny Brenda’s on June 16th along with bands Joy Riding and Sad Actor, and keep up with them on social media for more announcements. Watch the “Patron Without Funds” video through the link provided by Paste Magazine.

New Single from The Porchistas, EP to Be Released Soon

Following the release of their daring political single, “Mr. Chump,” The Porchistas have released a new track called “Mischief Night” off their upcoming EP, Axis and Allies. Described as “space-rockers,” The Porchistas, based out of New Jersey, believe in inspiring a sense of community with their music.

Check out the single below!

Founder Alan “Sucia” Smith says, “We see music and art as community building endeavors. When we throw events and shows at the house we try to make them trash free or trash minimal at least. We make food and have pot lucks to try to stoke a sense of community.”

The Porchistas believe in progressive politics, caring about the environment, and using music to bring people together. They blend genres and combine grooves, lyrics, and melodies seamlessly to create music that’s entirely unique to them. With songs like “Mr. Chump,” a diss track aimed unapologetically at The Orange Menace (our president, Donald Trump – and it makes me shudder to type the words), The Porchistas are real and honest, and they aren’t afraid to make a stand and shout for what they believe in. The track list for Axis and Allies promises more political tunes like “Ebolabama,” and “Mischief Night” tells the story of a local hit man while taking aim at the current political climate in America.

Check out “Mischief Night” and “Mr. Chump” up above. Keep your eye out for the release of the EP soon, and keep up with The Porchistas on social media for any more forthcoming announcements!

Tonight Alive Sign With Hopeless Records

Australian-based rock band Tonight Alive is back and better than ever with a new single and lyric video for “World Away.” The band has recently signed with Hopeless Records, which marks a big change for the band and opens up the door to exciting new opportunities. Hopeless Records is a huge label that has worked with popular artists like Neck Deep, Moose Blood, Yellowcard, The Used, All Time Low, and Sum 41, and the company’s EVP Business Development and A&R, Eric Tobin, said they are very excited to add Tonight Alive to the family.

Check out the video below!

As someone who was a huge fan of Tonight Alive in my early teenage years, I am so excited to see them come back with new music. Their new single, “World Away,” makes me feel nostalgic for all of their old music I used to listen to on repeat. It pulled me right back into my obsession with Tonight Alive and made me remember why I loved them in the first place. I will be listening to it on repeat over the next few days. I love Tonight Alive for their guitar riffs and heavy rhythms and melodies, and “World Away” does not disappoint in those aspects. It’s similar to their old stuff, but there are some subtle changes in the music, and I can tell this is the start of a new and exciting journey for Tonight Alive.

The song was produced by Dave Petrovic, who produced The Other Side, my favorite Tonight Alive album, and lead vocalist Jenna McDougall said the track “is a continuation of our quest for self understanding and empowerment, but this time through developing a personal relationship with darkness.” It’s awesome. Listen to it. And get excited, because Tonight Alive is recording their new album over the summer. I personally can’t wait for it.

The band is currently on a UK tour with You Me At Six, and then they are scheduled to appear at this year’s Slam Dunk Festival. Check out the full list of tour dates below, and listen to “World Away” on Tonight Alive’s official website.

Upcoming Tonight Alive Tour Dates:

Misery Loves Company Streams EP

South Jersey-based post-emo band Misery Loves Company, comprised of members Jimmy Ruggiero, Mike Williams, Joe Mascio Jr., and Anthony Caggiano, recently signed with Revival Recordings and is excited to announce the early release of their new EP, Love Notes and Highways. The band has partnered with Pure Grain Audio to make this early release possible, and they are excited to let fans join in this experience.

Check it out below!

Love Notes and Highways follows the theme of horror, as the boys in the band are avid lovers of the film genre. Misery Loves Company does something unique with their music, embracing dark and twisted vibes while still portraying positive messages through their songs. The group prefers to focus on sensitive subjects like mental illness, relationship struggles, and self-hardship, in an attempt to create a safe space for fans and listeners to escape to.

Misery Loves Company writes and performs for the kids who consider themselves loners and outcasts, aiming to let their listeners know that they are not alone. They do something admirable with their music in the way they embrace tough subjects in their own unique method.

Most of the band members suffer from depression and anxiety themselves, and lead vocalist Jimmy Ruggiero does not hide it: “So many bands these days forget or are ashamed of their roots but we wear ours on our sleeve.” Ruggiero said of the EP: “This album is a collection of stories from the past three years of my life. Each one details the problems I faced while having to let go of a toxic relationship I was in and how in the wake of disaster and chaos I found hope and peace.”

Fans of Tim Burton will enjoy this album, as there is one particular song and music video combination for single “Dead and Buried” that romanticizes death and the possibility of an afterlife. The song is also a taste of the EP’s larger theme of horror. Misery Loves Company is worth checking out if you’re a fan of the morbid and macabre, and if you’re struggling with issues that you think you might be facing alone.

Check it out below!

The band is here to remind you that you’re not, and they’re proof that there is a safe space for everyone in the music industry. Check out the entire EP, Loves Notes and Highways, below, and listen to “Dead and Buried” up above!

Sum 41 Announces Co-Heading Spring Tour

Following the release of their latest album, 13 Voices, Sum 41 is back and better than ever on their latest musical adventure. Since the release of their album in the fall, they have been touring nonstop to sold-out crowds around the world. Presented by Loudwire Live, the We Will Detonate Tour kicks off in Denver, CO on April 21st, 2017. The tour will end in Oklahoma on May 26th, and it’s sure to be a wild ride.

Fans and press praised the new album; Alternative Press says of 13 Voices and Sum 41’s frontman Deryck Whibley, “As a songwriter, it takes bravery to let the darkness in and open up about life’s lowest moments, but it pales in comparison to the push toward the light. Whibley balances both with ease here.”

The album is the band’s first in five years, preceded by 2011’s Screaming Bloody Murder, and it does not disappoint. 13 Voices is raw and powerful, and it comes from a very personal place for singer Deryck Whibley. It’s vulnerable and real, and it is sure to be a crowd-pleaser when it’s performed on the We Will Detonate Tour. The Flats Drop Surprise New EP 'Auburn in the Everlast' for Free

On Friday, Junuary 6th, The Flats, a five-piece alternative/indie-pop from Toledo, Ohio released their latest EP, Auburn in the Everlast completely free of charge.

Taking everyone by surprise, the band dropped news of the record in complete obscurity a few days ago along with the announcement of 3 brand new music videos as well. Releasing a single video each day culminating in the release of the EP on the 6th, you can download The Flats’ record, Auburn in the Everlast, for free on their bandcamp!

Auburn in the Everlast showcases the band at the top of their game. Drawing influences from bands like The Cure, The National, and even Third Eye Blind, there’s something to be said about this type of introspective and mature music that is well refined, tight, and produced in all the right ways without having its authenticity taken away. Founder/Singer Chris Kerekes explains that the new EP is about him entering a new phase of his life. It’s about moving forward and acknowledging the people who have come into his life just as much as those who have left and taking responsibility for all of his actions that have led him to this point of trying to distance himself from the negativity.

On top of a brand new EP and 3 new music videos, The Flats are also embarking on a short tour with Mat Kerekes (of Citizen) and Elder Brother (The Story So Far side project) and will be hitting Philly on the 13th.

You can check out the entire tour schedule in the poster below.

The Flats are starting off 2017 with an explosion, and everyone here at The Hook can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring them. For any and all information regarding The Flats and so much more, keep it tuned here at The Hook.

Civil Youth Ring In Holiday Season With "Let It Snow" Cover

Rising Philadelphia indie/alt-rockers, Civil Youth, are celebrating the holiday season the only way they know how: by releasing an epic cover for "Let It Snow," to help us all get in the spirit!

Recently, Civil Youth announced the official release date for their third full-length studio album, Conversations, which is to be released on May 19th. Civil Youth is taking a break from promoting Conversations to share with their fans an exclusive holiday song, which you can check out below!

This is what Civil Youth's Michael Kepko had to say about the song, "With all the Christmas covers coming out during the holidays, we wanted to give you something a little bit different. We were heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra on this one, so we took his "Let It Snow" and made it darker. We tried to make it as Civil Youth as possible with spacey guitars and a melody that's more minor and more mysterious. We even got dressed up for this... We hope your holidays are amazing and you enjoy our version of "Let It Snow"! Share with your family and friends to spread the holiday cheer!"

Definitely check it out, let your dog listen to it, your Mom, your Grandpa! And for more on Civil Youth, and what they're up to, check out their social media below! Our hometown heroes, so definitely peep the links!
